Padm'e gave birth beyond the grave
From what we learned in episode 3 Anakin believes that he was the killer of Padm'e, but when he supposedly killed Padm'e she was still pregnant. Then in episode 5 Palpatine tells Vader that Luke is his son. This should send a big red flag in Vader's head. If Luke was his son then he couldn't have killed Padm'e, and she had to have died after giving birth. So in conclusion Palpatine is dumb for telling Vader and Vader is dumber for not catching on.

um, dude...he did realize what it meant. Kinda when he asked Palpatine "How is that possible?"

By this point Palpatine thought he had complete control over Vader. After all, it only would take a bit of lightning to finish Vader off, so he thought there was no way Vader would do anything after realizing Palpatine's lies. He wasn't stupid. He wanted a new apprentice who could outstrip Vader, who had the same potential that Vader had once had.

But he was convinced otherwise. If you thought you killed your wife for 20 years and the guy who told you says "never mind" it would be questioned with more than a "how is that possible, and answered with more than a "search your feelings"

I think the realization that Padame's child(ren) survived is what causes Vader to want to overthrow the Emperor (because obviously Palpatine lied about that MAJOR event).

Vader would have wanted to overthrow Palpatine whether he discovered the truth of Luke and Leia or not. It's the Sith way.

When I saw the movie, like many other viewers, I thought Palpatine lied when he said Vader had killed Padmé but according to Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader, Palpatine really did believe that Vader had killed Padmé. It wasn't a lie. He was mistaken (sort of). Both Vader and Palpatine fell for Yoda's trick.

Although Dark Lord is a novel, so whilst we can postulate that what it says is the case, we cannot take it as writ. I think that the new TV show will cast light on when Vader and Palpatine really find out about Luke and Leia.

I was struck by the way Palapatine reveals Padme's death in ROTS. He says "it seems in your anger you killed her." He doesn't really know, what's important is what Vader believes, and at that moment anything that keeps Vader locked in his prison of shame and self-hatred is what Palpatine wants. Fast forward twenty-odd years that belief is so intrenched that even when faced with the truth it takes time for vader to shift his beliefs just like it would for any other person. Sometimes the truth is the hardest thing to actually believe.

it took Vader to see his dying son be torchered by force lighning to came back to the light, and yet he barely knows him. The death of the woman he had known and loved since he was 9 ,I think anyway, would make him avenge padm'e, but from all the movie shows he gives it little thought.
