"Aren't You A Little Large . . .
. . . for a leprechaun?"

What? You were expecting something else?

;)

That is exactly what Stephen Fitzgerald asks Horace in "The Luck of the Irish", the 1948 dramedy (part drama/part comedy) from 20th Century Fox (there's the Star Wars connection for you!) starring Tyrone Power (Stephen), Anne Baxter and Cecil Kellaway (Horace, the leprechaun). A fitting movie to watch today, St. Patrick's Day. :)

As I heard Tyrone Power utter those eight little words, I couldn't help but think of Leia's bemused remark to Luke :x when he burst into her cell aboard the Death Star: "Aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper?"

"What? Oh. . .the uniform. I'm Luke Skywalker. :x I'm here to rescue you," the blonde farmboy from Tatooine corrects. Like Luke :x having to justify his size that doesn't quite measure up to stormtrooper specifications, Horace has to explain to Stephen that his family of leprechauns is cursed . . . or some such reason explains his less-than-diminutive size. I was so excited to make the connection to Star Wars that I'm not really sure just what Horace said. :8}

I love finding Star Wars connections in life, whether it's in a piece of artwork (that has absolutely no Star Wars connection), the news, a television show, a book, a movie (especially if the movie came out before 1977!). :D Don't you? ;

Which brings me to another movie connection, this time from a film released in 2005: "Nomad: The Warrior". I was flipping through the cable channels yesterday, and happened upon this historical-based flick about a young man who was destined to unite the three warring tribes of 18th-century Kazakhstan. I decided to watch the last 30 minutes (this is what happens when one channel surfs ;) of the movie, and I couldn't help but think how the orphan boy-turned-hero reminded me of one Luke Skywalker. :x But that isn't even the first Star Wars connection or thought I had as I watched the last minutes of the film. At one point, said hero (I never did catch his name) was riding back to his tribe after escaping sure death at the hands of one of his enemies, when his father says to him: "One must give his life so the other can prevail in the name of justice." (The hero had just lost his best friend.) That line made me think of Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, then of Obi-Wan and Luke. :x While it's true that Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon eventually would have parted ways, at least as far as their roles as Master and Padawan were concerned, I wonder if Obi-Wan would have been the Jedi he eventually became if Qui-Gon had survived his dual with Darth Maul. Qui-Gon's death had a definitive effect on Obi-Wan and his role both as a Jedi and Master to Anakin (and, later, Luke :x).

Obi-Wan's words of warning to Darth Vader in "A New Hope" haunted my thoughts: "If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine." I got chills when I heard that statement back in 1977. I still do. Obi-Wan knew that he had to give his life so the other (Luke :x) could prevail in the name of justice. Sometimes the hero must make his way on his own, but, still, he is bolstered by those who have helped make him who he is. That's Luke :x in a nutshell; Obi-Wan, too.

I could expand on this subject of one giving his (or her . . . I am not sexist. I'm just trying to be succinct when I say "he") life so the other can prevail in the name of justice, but I think I'll save that for another day. That's not what this particular post is about anyway. I know, too, that you could rattle off a plethora of other connections. They are abundant. I just was stunned to come across two in such a short period of time, mostly because I've had so little time to actually sit down in front of the television of late. Was it the will of the Force? ?:| ;

Whatever the answer is, I'd just like to close by wishing you all a very Happy St. Patrick's Day - even to those of you who are not Irish. I'm not, but I'm wearing green today! (my Yoda t-shirt ;))

Happy St. Patrick's Day to you, too, my friend!! :x

Was it the will of the Force? I believe it was!

I LOVE seeing connections to Star Wars! Even in movies made 60 years ago!

What? You were expecting something else?

Of course not! :p

Qui-Gon's death had a definitive effect on Obi-Wan and his role both as a Jedi and Master to Anakin (and, later, Luke).

During Qui-Gon's funeral, Mace Windu asks Yoda, "But who was destroyed? The Master or the Apprentice?" I believe this question can be interpreted several ways. There is the question's outer layer -- that is, referring to the Sith and the Rule of Two -- but there is another message hidden deep within this sentence.

After Qui-Gon was felled by Darth Maul's wicked double blade, he attained an importance that possibly outweighed anything he did during his life.

Through what he learned from the Shaman of the Whills, Qui-Gon was able to pass on the knowledge of virtual immortality to Obi-Wan and Yoda, enabling the creation of a new generation of Jedi Knights.

Qui-Gon was not truly destroyed. His life had only just begun.

However, Obi-Wan was forced to see his Master cut down before his eyes. What must be understood is that Qui-Gon is one of the main reasons Obi-Wan was still a Jedi at that point. He nearly left/was kicked out of the Order a few times prior to the Duel of the Fates. This was a difficult, vulnerable time for Obi-Wan, and, as was seen in the duel, he was tempted by the dark side.

When he promised his Master that he would train Anakin, he was not ready. He was still, basically, a Padawan, and had not even been a Jedi Knight for a single day before he was thrust into this massive responsiblity. I am not saying that he shouldn't have honored his Master's dying wish. But I do believe that this may have destroyed his chance to explore the Force as a Jedi Knight, and destroyed him, at least a bit, as a person, too.

So, who was destroyed? The Master or the Apprentice?

The Apprentice. On both counts. B-)

Some wonderful connections... and as your comment noted, I was totally expecting something about Order 66! But sometimes it's nice to have my expectations confounded. :)

Happy St. Patty's Day!

Melinda, I hope you had a great day!!
It always amazes me when I sit down to watch a movie that I find myself comparing it to
Star Wars. The simplest things strick a cord.

Luck of the Irish be with you;) and the force too:)

Great blog, Melinda! And Happy St. Patrick's Day to you!

"One must give his life so the other can prevail in the name of justice."

I'm reminded of Luke in this line as well. Actually of both Luke and Anakin. Luke willingly gave up his life in the name of justice, and Anakin finally did the same.

It's so interesting the connections we can make to SW in other movies!

Even in movies made 60 years ago!

Especially so! Just because they came out before our favorite saga. :D

but there is another message hidden deep within this sentence.

VS, I got chills when I read your musings and started really thinking on this deeper level. Wow!!!

Truthfully, I always took that line about which was destroyed as reference to the Sith. (still do) But, on a deeper, much less construed level, the great Jedi Masters could have been talking about QG and OW. Of course, there is no doubt that QG was the Master in that particular duo, but the fast-paced sequence of events between his death and OW taking on the mantle of Anakin's education had quite a profound effect.

I do know that Obi-wan almost did not make it to knighthood (I know they were meant for youth, but I enjoyed the Jedi Apprentice series :)), but the important thing to remember is that he did get chosen to be Qui-Gon's apprentice, and he did decide to resume his training after he questioned whether he should be a Jedi. I think Obi-Wan had an incredible amount of resolve, and he always knew he really was meant to be a Jedi. I also think his own situations as a padawan made Obi-Wan an excellent teacher to Anakin. (maybe that's a blog for another day! :D)

I'm wearing a T-shirt with Qui-Gon on it

I'm not surprised. ;)

it's nice to have my expectations confounded

Confounded you I have? I consider this quite a feat. ;) :)

The simplest things strick a cord

Isn't that amazing? Some people think everything has to be so complicated, when, in fact, it is the most simple situation/story that is the most lasting. :D

Luke willingly gave up his life in the name of justice

You're so right, dh! I hadn't considered that - because I interpreted "giving up one's life" in the most literal sense - dying. But Luke :x did indeed give up his life in the name of justice. He just didn't have to die to do so. :D And Anakin, in the end, did that as well, only in the most literal of senses.

Ooh! Neat connections!

I wonder if Obi-Wan would have been the Jedi he eventually became if Qui-Gon had survived his dual with Darth Maul.
That's a really great point-- I don't think Obi-Wan would have been the same. In what ways? Well, there's a whole blog right there! ;)

Sometimes a person will say something to me (in real life) that reminds me of a SW line or moment...and often I just start laughing silently in my head and let him/her continue on! :^O

Maybe you could do an "Order 66" blog for your 67th entry. :^O

I LOVE SW connections and see them everywhere, in everything. Even in my current obsessions, Lost and Twilight, I make the connections as well. I've documented the Twilight connections here in this blogosphere already (or some of them, lol...I could go on and on and ON....), but as I've rambled to DH about many times, I see Lost connections as well. Many of them. (more rambling on my part!)

So good to see you writing a blog, my dear, Melinda. :x

Belated Happy St. Patty's Day to you as well.
