Empire at War: a Review (kind of)
Star Wars: Empire at War (PC)

Well, well, well... A Star Wars game that's actually fun and replayable! This is probably the best Star Wars franchise game since Jedi Knight 2 (granted they are 2 completely different games...). having run the simple tutorial, and not being one for single player games, I wanted to play this game online with a worthy adversary. I've been a fan of RTS games since Warcraft 2 came out way back when. Incidentally, EAW plays in much the same way that the Warcraft series did (resource management, troop building, technology advancement) and was pretty easy to jump right into.

Apparently Matt Wood had grown tired of having his butt handed to him by me in Half-Life 2 Deathmatch, because he challenged me to a EaW duel. It seemed fitting that I pit myself against General Weezous. He fought well, but by the time my AT-AT's and Darth Vader showed up in his base, it was all over but the crying.

I have to say, like any well crafted game, it left me wanting to play more and more. Beyond simple ground combat skirmishes, You can opt to play space based combat or even Inter-Galactic conquests involving both forms of combat, smuggler runs, spying, etc. What's more, it's easy to learn and jump right into. A+

OK, so I'm not much of a review writer. But you get the point...

Anyone else playing this game? What did you think?

He gets tired of that?
Just for that statement alone, I'm making this the featured blog of the day.

I really enjoyed the demo and it looks like they've finally hit most the right notes after Star Wars: Rebellion and Force Commander's so-so results...

Despite this I still have a feeling it's not going to sell as spectacularly as their other titles (IE: Battlefront II) merely because of the genre. So I'll probably hold off for a few months and buy it when the price comes down.

... Blasted Warcraft II. Never could beat the last level of the campaign. :p

I'm enjoying it. I like the space combat quite a bit, especially making use of the various special abilities of the various units. I'm currently in the midst of the Rebel campaign. The Empire regularly shows up in force and stomps on my outgunned rebellion, but I'm slowly taking over new systems. Fleets of Star Destroyers = very bad news for me. But fun, and very appropriate.

So far enjoying it, however in the long run I think it will not last the play structure as say Starcraft has in the world of strategy gaming etc. Reminds me of Battlegrounds etc.

Love the game and its challenging enough. Can easily play 4 hours of it and that makes for a good game indeed. The sell aspect was a bit misleading in terms of what you can do. For instance when you zoom into some action, you cannot control anything...you have to zoom back out etc. You loose focus of your group also.

After playing it some more I think playing vs another online will prove to be awesome.
Just my 2cents.

Yeah, I am now. I think it is a pretty good game.

If you're ever playing online, look for Gahmah.
