Gunship vs. Battle Droids
Trying to come up with enough content to host a campaign can be difficult the first time you act as Game Master (GM). Just as our first encounter. After our normal GM ran out of content and wanted to take a break from Gm'ing we volunteered GM'ing a Star Wars campaign. We had a general plot we wanted to follow and the resources to do it. The problem was pacing.
We decided to start the campaign off with some action. Our particular story started moments before Ep III when the CIS attacks Coruscant. Player party consisted of a soldier, officer, and Force Sensative Scout. To help the heroes, the soldier was given control of two Republic Commandos and the officer was given a Republic Gunship. We had two different groups of droids on two different fronts. One consisted of 100 battle droids, 20 SBD's and 5 droidikas. The other had 50 battle droids, 5 SBD's 2 droidikas and 2 bodyguard droids. The heroes decided to send the officer with the gunship to engage the larger group while the others who would be later joined by the GM controlled Jedi attended the smaller group. While the smaller group went as planned it was the officers actions that completely caught us by surprise. He annihilated the droid army in what would account to 90 seconds of time passed in game. This forced us to have our heroes wait around the Command Center until Anakin and Obi-Wan rescued Palpatine and returned to Coruscant.
We underestimated two things. 1) The players ability to think outside the box and 2) How quickly battles last in game time. What accounts for half an hour of rolling dice and taking actions accumulates to like maybe three minutes of time that has passed in game.
Mistakes noted.
