The second part to our Han Solo blog has to do with the reward money he got near the end of ANH.
If you missed part 1 check here. He saves the girl and gets paid. Good for him. He set out from Tatooine with the notion that he will finish the deal with seventeen thousand credits in his pocket. Credits he needed to pay Jabba the Hutt for a smuggling job gone wrong.
Greedo:
Jabba's through with you. He has no use for smugglers who drop their shipments at the first sign of an Imperial cruiser.
So, we follow Luke through the hanger to find Han loading up some crates filled with credits (we assume that's what was in the boxes). Luke whines about Han leaving
Han Solo:
That's right, yeah. I got some old debts I've got to pay off with this stuff.
Now we know that the smuggler comes back and saves Lukes bacon, then gets a nice medal. Two years later, we learn that Jabba wants Han's hide. So what happened to the reward? How could he not have found some time during those two years to head over the Jabba's palace and pay the big slug? We have an old cassette tape depicting Hans run in with a bounty hunter on Ord Mandell. At the beginning of the story he mentions that he's been so short on real money he thought about hawking his Heroes Medal. What did he buy with the reward? We know he didn't upgrade the Falcon, that hunk of junk couldn't even jump to lightspeed. Did he lose it in a Sabaac game?
Your thoughts are more than welcome.
