Only a Sith deals in Absolutes?
Only a Sith Deals in Absolutes? What the heck is this?

Probably the most talked about line from Eppy 3 was Anakin's, "Either you are with me, or you are my enemy!" line, and Obi-Wan's response, "Only a Sith deals in absolutes." There were many disputes over whether this was a jab at Mr. President, just a coincidence, or even a jab on Jesus Christ. Yes, it was Jesus who gave us the phrase, "either you're with me or you're against me". Now I love George Lucas, but I also support George W. Bush (well more than Kerry anyway!), and at least like to consider myself a faithful Catholic. So I needed to explore this exchange of dialogue further, even if just to reconcile these three aspects for myself.

If the public's initial reaction to this line, that it was a shot at Bush, was correct, then it seems rather obvious that Bush is, well, evil, the sith-like figure; While Obi-Wan is the tolerant, wide-minded liberal. Now I don't presume to know what George Lucas is really thinking, but I immediately dismissed this option at first, simply because I thought GL was too smart to not realize that putting a blatant message like that in a space odyssey just doesn't work, it clashes...a lot. Of course I also dismissed the possibility that it was a bash against Jesus. It was infinitely more likely to be a critique of Bush than a slight against Jesus.

Of course the coincidental option was the one I wanted to believe, after all, it was a strong line of finality, adding to the already intense emotional punch of the scene. But then I saw the film again, and something struck me. Remember Palpatine's scenes with Anakin? Both the opera scene and the scene where Anakin finally realizes that Palpatine and Sidious are one in the same? Palpatine tells Anakin, multiple times, that the Jedi are scared of dark side that they only keep to the stark boundaries of the light side of the Force, and that Anakin should reject the "narrow-minded, dogmatic view of the Force"!!!! This directly contradicts Darth Vader's line on Mustafer. If the Jedi are the one's who refuse to explore the dark side, then are not they the one's who, "Only Deal in Absolutes?" Even Darth Vader's line directly before the, "either you're with me...etc." speech contradicts it, when he says, "I do not fear the dark side as you do!" So that leaves us with the Syllogism with either Palpatine and Anakin lying, George Lucas is really taking a shot at Bush, or that there was just some rather loose editing of Revenge of the Sith.

Let's examine each option, starting with Palpatine and Anakin lying. Someone could say that Palpatine was only saying these things to seduce Anakin, and that they aren't really true. As a die-hard Star Wars fan, I think that's ridiculous. Watch the films, read the novels, the Jedi are definitely narrow-minded about the force (with good reason). The Jedi are the one's who say that attachment is forbidden because it may possibly lead us to the Dark Side. Yessiree, The Jedi are very strict with their dogmatic views of the Force.
Secondly, is George Lucas is really taking a shot at Bush? I addressed this in the second paragraph, and I think that GL did not have this intention.
That leaves only the third option, that there was some loose editing of Revenge of the Sith. I think that George wanted a big line, with emotional weight for that scene, it is after all practically the last bit of dialogue before, "The Duel". And I think that somebody just missed this contradiction. (Hmm, maybe Mom's right, I am too obsessed about Star Wars)

I know, it is kind of a let down after I did all this typing. I have to admit; that halfway through writing this, I logically convinced myself that George Lucas was NOT taking slighting Dubya, so I at least educated myself. I'd really like comments on this, since there probably is a few flaws in my above argument!

Gosh, and people say the EU has poor continuity! (Sorry, I just had to put that one in!)
