Serenity
A/N: I've been resisting writing about this movie, because to do so would validate the story and I'd have to accept the consequences of the film-which devestates me.

*~*~*

I was so very excited to see this movie. Having arrived late to the phenomenon that is Firefly I was able to watch (multiple times) the TV show on DVD. I love it. I love the characters, I love the setting, I love the stories, and I love the depth the show was reaching...and then it was cancelled. No final episode, no character resolution, and no closure to a very big question...What was up with River Tam?!?!?

Fast forward three years to the release of Serenity. Meant to be a movie to bring some closure to the TV show, it also (supposedly) works as a stand alone film. I don't know if that's entirely true though, as my brother (who had never seen an episode of Firefly) was a little confused the first part of the movie.

But I was restless to see it and anxious to find out where Joss Whedon would take us next.

The story didn't disappoint. It was exciting, action packed, suspenseful, and even a little gory (Reavers!). The characters hadn't changed much from the TV show-though Mal seemed more of a jerk, and suddenly Simon and River were back at Episode 1 and 2 status on the ship. But most of the backstories were there, and if you knew the TV show then you could catch certain references that other non-Firefly fans would have no idea about.

I went into the movie unspoiled, and was completely unprepared (FINAL WARNING....SPOILERS!) for Book's death. After all the fan support and the struggle to bring this crew back to the screen suddenly one of them was dead?!?! I was in shock.

Well, you can then imagine the greater shock I felt when, after successfully evading the Reavers and the Alliance ships, Wash crash lands Serenity and then is killed by a harpoon. Let me say here that Wash was my favorite character. I loved his sarcastic wit and I thought he and Zoe an adorable couple. After it happened I found myself sitting in the theatre with my hand over my mouth on the verge of standing and screaming (very Luke-like) NOOOOooooOOOOOooooOOO!

Needless to say, that brutal death distracted me enough that I almost didn't care what happened next. What did it matter when Wash was dead???

Well I got over it, sort of, as the Reavers started coming after the remaining crew. The last part of the film was action packed and I truly thought that Kaylee and Simon would also succomb (and I thought River was dead for sure, but she held her own...hehe).

I did like the movie (save Wash's untimely death) and I hope that it does well enough that more are made. But if this is the last we see of Serenity and her crew, I think it was a good way to end it. There was a sort of resolution for River, which is really what the whole thing ended up being about anyway.

I will be going again later this month. I hope to gain more from this second viewing, now that I know to expect the deaths of two characters.

I realize this is a somewhat disjointed entry and a very vague review-but all I needed was to put my thoughts down.

Serenity acts as a surrogate for my Star Wars obsession. And I think the two franchises share many of the same fans. If you haven't seen the movie yet (and now you're spoiled...shame on you!!!) GO SEE IT!!! It's worth the few bucks!

"Take my love, take my land, take me where I cannot stand
I don't care, I'm still free, they can't take the sky from me
Take me out, to the black, tell them I ain't comin' back
Burn the land and boil the sea, you can't take the sky from me
There's no place I can't be, since I found Serenity"
