What Is Firefly?
It's June, which of course means it is now Official Serenifly Month here at Vicomte's Blog Extravaganza. An entire month of choice Firefly-related bloggery, I know you're excited. In this first installment, I'm going to explain what Firefly is, and hopefully pique your interest enough that you will watch the show and stop back in for more.

Without any further delay...

What is Firefly?

Firefly was a short-lived Science-fiction Western Action Space Drama that aired on FOX way back in the Autumn season of 2002, roughly from September though December, before it was most unjustly cancelled. Through much campaigning and hard work by fans and supporters of the show, a full-length feature film, Serenity, was released as a continuation to the series last fall.

The series itself is difficult to describe. It takes place in the future, approximately 500 years, to be approximate, where the Earth had become 'used up', so the inhabitants of said sphere packed up and moved to a new galaxy, where the planets were Terraformed (Earthified) for human life. The governing body, the Alliance, is formed from a union of the United States and China. The story itself concerns the inhabitants of Serenity, a Firefly-class mid-bulk transport. A smuggling ship. The Captain, Malcolm 'Mal' Reynolds, is a former Browncoat, the name given to the Independents that fought against the Alliance, and lost. The rest of the crew includes a Browncoat, mercenary, mechanic, preacher, space-whore, doctor, and a cool-minded pilot that slouches and wears Hawaiian shirts. Let's not forget the crazy sister, whose brother rescued her from an Alliance academy, consequently turning himself into a wanted fugitive.

This isn't your standard 'Space Pirates' fare, however. Firefly has style, a lot of style. Deep concepts, interesting characters, story arcs, cinematography, humor, and men with blue hands that walk two by two. Sounds boring, I know. This is why movie reviewers are overpaid. Words don't work. The best way to find out what Firefly is, is to watch Firefly. Rent, buy, download the pilot on iTunes, whatever, as long as you try it. A wise friend of mine once said "Don't knock it 'til you try it". Of course, he was talking about Broadway Musicals, but I think it applies here, as well. If you don't want to try the series, by all means, rent the movie, Serenity. I have not met one person who didn't enjoy the film, not a one. Besides, would Vicomte lie to you? Yes. But not this time.

The most compelling proof I have that Firefly is good is the movie itself. If a cancelled television show can be made into a major motion picture three years after its cancellation, it had to have been doing something right. It was picked up by Universal, by the way, not some unknown company. Credentials, mate, credentials.

I must also mention that June 23 is Serenity Day, on which all Browncoats around the 'Verse will be celebrating all things Serenity, including buying a copy of the DVD. The purchases are intended to provide a spike in the sales charts to show the folks up at Universal that people do care about Firefly, and are going to fight for it. If you buy the film, that would be the best time, although buying it at all is a favor to yourself and every other Browncoat. There are also charity screenings of Serenity planned around the world, as well as a possible letter-writing campaign.

I often hear people asking which they should watch first, the movie or the series. It really doesn't matter. The movie was made to be independent of the series, able to be enjoyed by someone who has never heard the word 'gorram' uttered before. The movie will be much more fulfilling if you watch at least some of the series first, of course, but that is in no way mandatory, just like the Fruity Oaty bar.

Keep in mind that Firefly is an intelligent show, and therefore only appreciated by intelligent people. You don't want to be stupid, do you?

Interested?

I'm working on it, Vicomte! I've got my assignment! I'm working on it!! :O

No, really, it does sound like a very cool series. Right up my alley, so to speak, so I am looking forward to checking it out and then blogging about it. Now, I just have to get my hands on it... :)

Seriously, Firefly. I don't know how many times I've promoted this. And people thought it was just spam. Those are the ones that don't and won't get it.

This series is highly recommended. The writing, by Joss Whedon and his crew of mega-Star Wars fans should appeal to most people 'round these parts. Adam Baldwin's character is the best (obviously, this is subjective) but I love every one of the crew (and cast).

One quick correction...
so the inhabitants of said sphere packed up and moved to a new galaxy,

They actually just found one star system with a LOT of planets that could be terraformed. There was some debate about this, but Serenity has a few shots of a map of the system.

No lightspeed, no aliens, just some Chinese-swearin' cowboys ridin' their space-coach causin' mischief...

I was sketchy about writing Solar System, seeing as no one really knows for sure. The system could be located in a different galaxy, so I went with that.:)

The good news is that I watched the trailer on the Serenity site, and did it look gooooood! :D

The bad news is that there's no way I can get my hands on the series in the Netherlands. Bummer. The movie will have to do.

Didn't Joss say at some point that you can't go past lightspeed in the Firefly 'Verse? 'Cause it's all... realisticaler.

Is that a word? I'll file it in with heroicer and Earthified :D

You might want to provide some linkage to people besides the opening monologue/themesong though, eh? So don't forget people, you can't pick up Firefly on Amazon, on iTunes, or even get a taste of it by searching "hello cowgirl" on Google.

I didn't want to sound pushy, just persuasive. You can be pushy, though, Rive.

If it's all the same, in the previously mentioned opener, it does say a whole galaxy of Earths were terraformed.:p

Excellent intro! Vicomte's Blog Extravaganza receives Kenobi-fan's seal of approval (if that's worth anything) for highlighting Firefly this month. I heard of this show when it came out and didn't give it a second thought. Ship in space? Sounds like a Star Wars retread...no thanks! I was sadly mistaken. I'm sure my snobbery cost this show some additional air time. The characters are instantly likable as is the dialogue and story. It takes no more than a single scene to get you hooked...I gorram guarantee it, I do. The episodes are extremely entertaining and virtually compel you to re-watch them, which I have, and will do so again. To put it simply - It's fun...and who couldn't use more fun in this life?

If you can post a blog on why FOX cancelled it*, I think many would appreciate it.

I can tell you why FOX cancelled the show...that's EASY....ratings. Firefly wasn't getting them.

Now, the REAL question is WHY weren't the ratings there...

1) FOX didn't run the episodes in order. The pilot introduced all the characters and set the mood, but that wasn't the first episode aired. They jumped into the middle of the story.

2) They replaced another popular show with it, Dark Angel. I'm not saying one is better than the other (though DA season 2 was....rough), a lot of fans of DA were miffed and turned the channel.

3) If I remember right, FOX preempted FF a few times, making it truly hit and miss when it was on.

(cont'd)

I don't know why, but FOX (intentionally or not) killed this show through bad decisions.

As to the galaxy/solar system deal, I stand corrected. They are all in one solar system, but I've no idea if they were still in the Milky Way or not. I would assume, since no extra-luminal travel exists this is the case, but that's just an assumption.

Ship in space? Sounds like a Star Wars retread...no thanks!

A "ship in space" and the Star wars allure type thing was what got me watching it when it was on air, at least when I could. I only saw a few episodes then, but went out to see Serenity in theaters when it was released. Don't own the DVD, but I think I will this month.

I must say, I love this. Especially as someone who has described Firefly as "a Western! With spaceships! And horses! Just go with me on this for a minute, alright?"

But thankfully, if I repeated myself enough, they gave into their curiosity. That's what you're going for this month, isn't it? Isn't it? Isn't it?

The other being Episode III. He probably won't remember, but I have the stub. SW Ep III will always be his FIRST movie.
