A History of Lightsaber Variants
Although only the classic standard lightsaber and one variant, Darth Maul's double bladed lightsaber, are in the movies, the Expanded Univers has been creating lightsaber variants from as early as June 1985. What follows is a real world timeline of lightsaber variants.

1977 - Star Wars (A New Hope) introduces us to the standard lightsaber.

June 1985 - Lumiya battles luke with her lightwhip in Marvel Star Wars 96: Duel With a Dark Lady.

June 1985 - To combat the lightwhip luke build a shoto in the same issue.

March 1994 - Gantoris constructs a dual-phase lightsaber in Jedi Search.

August 1995 - Exar Kun weilds a double bladed lightsaber in Tales of the Jedi: The Sith War.

October 1997 - Gorc uses a lightclub in Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II .

1999 - Jedi Apprentice: The Rising Force introduces us to the training saber.

September 2000 - The tonfa-style lightsaber first appears in Star Wars: Darth Maul.

July 2001 - Master Zao is the pioneer of the lightsaber cane in Darkness.

May 2002 - Count Dooku is seen wielding a curved-hilt lightsaber Episode II.

May 2002 - The electrum lightsaber also makes it debute in Episode II.

February 2003 - Ventress displays the set of lightsabers that lock together to form a double bladed lightsaber in Jedi: Mace Windu.

February 2004 - Republic #61 introduces us to the forked lightsaber.

November 2005 - Battlefront II depicts Asajj Ventress weilding a fiber-cord linked lightsaber.
