Bring Back Star Wars - a Channel 4 programme
Last night I watched Bring Back Star Wars, a programme made by Channel 4 (UK) which was originally broadcast earlier on in the year. I missed it the first time around, but it was shown again recently, so I managed to catch it using 4oD, Channel 4's online TV service.

Channel 4 have made a few of these Bring Back programmes, attempting to reunite the cast of old TV programmes or films - I remember they did one on The A-Team a while back - but this Star Wars edition was their most ambitious project yet.

The show was presented by Justin Lee Collins, who I usually find really irritating, but he did a good job here (despite sporting one of the worst hairdos I've seen on TV recently, and that was before he was styled to look like a Wookiee!) The programme followed Justin around as he galloped across London and LA in search of various members of the Original Trilogy cast, before inviting them to a reunion party he was throwing in London.

His hit-list included all the main characters from the films, as well as the actors who played some of the more minor roles. But what was interesting was that, instead of simply arranging interviews with all these people through their agents, Justin went about it more like a crazed fan than a TV show presenter, enlisting the help of paparazzi agencies, arranging fake events as bait, and, in the case of Warwick Davis, climbing over a fence into his back garden, unannounced! And it seems these methods were the only way to get in touch with the cast, as towards the end of the programme we see that actually phoning up and asking for an interview turns out to be very expensive and impractical.

I found it strange to think, but then again, not really that surprising that these actors hardly see anything of each other anymore. In fact, in the case of Kenny Baker and Anthony Daniels, the pair don't get on at all - quite ironic really. As well as shedding light on the two droids' off-screen relationship, Justin manages to tease lots more gossip out of the cast and confirm many rumours, including those surrounding Mark Hamill's car crash and David Prowse's falling out with George Lucas.

It's also quite interesting to see how most of the cast's lives are now fairly normal, and that they're perhaps no longer as excited about the idea of Star Wars as their fans are. In fact, for some, being part of Star Wars really ruined their subsequent acting careers.

Unfortunately we only get one interview with one of the really big stars, and not everybody turns up to Justin's reunion party, but nevertheless, it was a good watch, as it's great to see such candid interviews with the people who helped create one of the biggest pop culture phenomenons of our time.

If you're in the UK, the programme is available for a couple more weeks through 4oD.

Hi,
I've got it to watch on Sky+ although channel 4 can be a bit jumpy at times.

Well, I just watched it on YouTube, and it was pretty interesting. I learned quite a bit, to be honest... there was some info that I've never heard of before! And not too shabby... props to that host, Justin!

It doesn't surprise me that they don't really see each other any more. Besides, it was over 30 years ago, and just because you work on a movie with someone doesn't mean you're automatically going to be best friends (clearly like Anthony and Kenny).

Thanks again for letting us know about this... very interesting!

May the Force be with you, Always!
