If you are currently reading this blog you either clicked on the wrong link, or you are genuinely intrigued by the similarities between the Star Wars universe and one of the greatest cartoons of our time. Hopefully this blog will serve to satisfy both sets of readers, not upsetting any along the way.
We shall begin by drawing the first parallel between the characters of Spongebob and Luke Skywalker. Both live fairly ordinary lives (at the point of
A New Hope) until a fateful series of events give them the opportunity to fulfil their ambitions - Skywalker seeks to become a Jedi while Spongebob applies for a job at the Krusty Krab. From this point on, neither of their lives are ever the same.
The next comparison can be seen in the teachers that guide the paths of Skywalker and Squarepants. Luke seeks teaching from the wise old Jedi Obi-Wan, while Spongebob learns from the master of underwater fast food, Eugene H. Krabs. Both mentors successfully train their pupils, one saving the galaxy and the other serving up Krabby Patties daily.
The two students both own and are proficient with a treasured weapon. Skywalker's being the elegant lightsaber, while Squarepants values his trusty spatula, both acquiring a considerable level of skill, calling upon their expertise with the device when necessary.
There are similarities between the Jedi temple and the Krusty Krab too. Both are communal centres of learning, open to those with the right midichlorian count and the unemployed, respectively.
And there are villains in both sagas, namely Darth Vader and Plankton. Darth Vader seeks to thwart the Rebels and rule the galaxy at the right hand of the Emperor while Plankton seeks to steal the formula for the Krabby Patty to produce in his own restaurant, backed up by his tiring computer wife, Karen. Neither succeed, and in the case of Darth Vader, the Sith eventually turns to the light side. We are yet to see whether Sheldon J. Plankton will give up his incessantly evil ways.
Apart from their tutors, our heroes are not alone in their quest against evil though. Luke Skywalker gains the help and support of Leia, Han, Chewie and the droids, while Spongebob has Patrick, Squidward, Gary and Sandy for companionship. Whenever trouble is afoot, Skywalker and Spongebob have their friends to call upon for support and spontaneous song.
In fact, the Star Wars galaxy and Bikini Bottom are very similar, both full of many species, some vying for power, others just wanting to sit back and take life easy.
And so, there you have it. There are evidently some striking similarities between our favourite film saga and an underwater cartoon. And if you don't understand any of what you have just read I suggest tuning into Nickelodeon once in a while for some nautical nonsense.
