Khan Shoots First!!
While cruising around on the Digital Bits page, I came across some very interesting news: The original Star Trek series will be "upgraded" with new CGI effects for its release in future High-Definition DVD formats.

Since I am not that much of a Trek fan(I'll watch it sometimes. I of course like Wrath of Khan and will watch anything with the Borg:D), I really don't know what to say about it. Just read the articles I linked to so you can hear what those involved have to say, as well as fan reactions, which ranges from "cool!" to more irate and venomous reactions. I have read some of the comments that posters have left. Only a few are level-headed and open-minded, while I regret to say that the rest are quite profane. There is no problem in having misgivings about it, but making personal attacks and using obscene and degrading language is totally uncalled for. Case in point: at Aint It Cool News many have quite predictably brought up George Lucas. Mostly it consists immature insults such as "They are doing to Trek what that fat turkey-necked money-grubbing Luc-### (the term Luca$ is also used) did when he raped my childhood and crapped CGI all over his movies."

All I have to say about this news (for now at least) is "What would Gene Roddenberry think? Would he aprove?" That is my question, Since he died in the early 90's. If he actually said before he died "I would like the original series to be updated" or if he was still alive today, I wouldn't have a problem with it. Which brings up Lucas. He is the creator, and as long as he is still alive, he can do any gorramn thing he wants with his movies. And after his death, nobody should mess with them, not even his children or Rick McCallum.

'Nuff Said (for now... expect more on this issue from me later)

Discuss Please. And keep it civil.;)

Wow, I did not know about the 'Trek' update...crazy. I enjoy AICN, but you're right, many of the commenters are out of control. It's fine to hate something, but many of the comments unnecessarily coarse...which only goes to prove the stereotype that many net-nerds have no sense of self-control or perspective when it comes to television or cinematic entertainment. It figures.

This is great. Frankly, the originals are pretty unwatchable for the effects. Yeah yeah story character yadda yadda yadda. You expect me to take you seriously standing in front of that styrofoam rock?

I am a trek fan not a trekkie or trekker and the TOS could use a good make over and it will not hurt a thing. The ships will finally look right and the Phaser and torpedos will now fire form consistent place on the ship.

I think it depends on how they re-do the effects. While there could be some good to come from it, it could look really silly if they have modern day effects with a 60s era feel to the show.

WWGRD?

I think he'd probably upgrade.

The thing is, though, that Trek really only gained popularity when it went into syndication and later got on GL's coattails and made a movie. Part of the popularity has always been the cruddy effects -- even cruddy by the standards of the time. That's what Trekkies do, right? Find inconsistencies and problems and laugh/ snort over them as they practice their Klingon-speak. What will they have if the effects are good? Only debates about the realism of whether reversing the flow to the di-lithium chambers could really have the intended effect.

I frankly hope they do the same thing with TNG. What was cutting-edge in 87 was obsolete even before the end of that series.

I think Mr. Roddenberry would have done the same thing Mr. Lucas would do, and any number of other directors would do, given the chance: make their VISION come to reality. (Ridley Scott w/ Blade Runner, for instance).

It's been said (I think by Lucas) that a director is never done with a film, they just have them taken away.

I'm good with this, but y'all KNOW the backlash is coming...........hard....

I was watching TNG the other day on Spike TV. The CGI spaceship models would barely pass for animatic quality these days.;)

The backlash from a small but vocal minority, I'm sure. It's ultimately, 'what is best for Star Trek?' Doing this increases the chances that someone who has never given the show a chance before might get hooked. If you're in it for the long-haul, you can't keep catering to the purists who ensure that your audience never has a chance to grow.

I'm gonna make my one "stupid mook on the 'net" comment, which I have to do every now and then, but if Paramount really wants to get more interest, they can release their TV series (all the ST along with others) at LESS than $100 a pop. Most TV series on DVD run about $45. But $300 for TOS, and $700 for EACH additional series puts this WAY out of my price range. ($100 per season, 7 seasons).

Like I said, I'm looking forward to the improved Trek. But I'm one of those who greatly enjoyed the original Star Wars, and enjoyed the SE even MORE because it felt to me what SW COULD have been (which, I believe was Mr. Lucas's intention). So I'm quite OK with this.....

....just the pricing issue....

What if the Klingons drank Guinness?

They probably never would have left the Home World, I suppose.
