Darth Bane: Path Of Destruction - a review
As I have mentioned before I don't read EVERY EU book out there and don't know a LOT of the history that many fans do when it comes to stories set in the early days of the Republic etc.

But I had heard great things about the book "Darth Bane: Path Of Destruction" by Drew Karpyshyn and decided to give it a read.

I'm glad I did.

From the get go this novel takes you in, setting up a character that is essentially a "Bad Guy" by showing us just HOW Bane's upbringing, environment and influences led to his becoming a natural for becoming a Sith.

It's so easy to simply label a character as "The Bad Guy" but Karpyshyn makes him far more interesting by making him sympathetic and identifiable. As I read I could see myself reacting in the same way Bane did to the events that shaped his life.

Bane doesn't simply set OUT to be "Evil" and from HIS point of view he's NOT.

It's a fascinating look into just how the Dark Side slowly corrupts the thought processes, taking one from the natural guilt and sorrow over doing things one knows is wrong to justifying hate, revenge and MURDER as natural and necessary.

The novel is fairly straight forward, which I like. Unlike many EU stories that attempt to follow the events of several or more characters at once, "Path Of Destruction" follows a linear form and focuses almost entirely on Bane himself, which makes it easy to follow and remember where one left off after a break in reading.

Karpyshyn also does a wonderful job of tying up loose ends and questions about the ancient Sith...why the "Rule of Two" was established, how the "Darth" title came to be used and what it really MEANS...and while there are of course references to other EU works there is no need for one to have READ them to follow this story, it is a standalone work in itself.

I was worried that with it being so far set in the past that Mr. Karpyshn may go to extremes to show how "ancient" his story truly was by inventing HIS own take on the SW Universe, but the author is VERY loyal to the ground works established by other EU Authors and of course George Lucas himself. Hence reading about the alien planets & species isn't a chore, and many mentioned and used as characters are already quite familiar to SW fans.

I am a little late to the party so I'm just NOW finding out Mr. Karpyshyn has a sequel planned but after reading "Path Of Destruction" I now eagerly look forward to finding out where it goes from here.

I have this book. It's sitting on the shelf next to me. It's staring at me right now. It wants me to read it....haha!

I really will get to it eventually. I'm starting to feel that SW EU overload though. Y'know what I mean? I might have to take an EU break so when I return to read Darth Bane, I will truly enjoy it...

I loved that book!! It quickly became one of my most favorite SW novels!

Great review! Sounded a lot like the one I did shortly after the book came out. :D

I can't wait for the next installment either! Should be awesome!!!!!

Path of Destruction was the best Star Wars read in a while. In my opinion there wasn't an NJO book as good, and it stomps all over the Swarm War and Legacy of the Force. Some of the Clone Wars novels were fine (the M*A*S*H* books and Labyrinth of Evil were superb) but lately I've been disappointed. I threw Outbound Flight away in disgust two weeks ago after several chapters so I'm looking forward to Drew's second Bane book.

I just hope that the tight publishing schedule (just 5 months to write it) doesn't affect the quality. Drew's latest blog entry a day or two ago gives a good update on the project.

Who'd have though that a top Sith Lord would have been a miner called Des?

Oh and Deej, you never mentioned if you read the comic Jedi Vs Sith. Well if you haven't, you should. Just ignore the minor continuity errors that clash with the book, as I've often stated elsewhere, you have to see it from a "different newspaper telling the same story with their own views" idea.

Pretty much like the differences with Labyrinth of Evil and the last couple of chapters of the Clone Wars toons.

If you have the chance, see my review of the comic that I did way back here.

Oh great! Another reason why I need to get and read this book. I've heard so many good things about it that I guess I have to buy it. I'm just waiting for the paperback edition. The only Hardcover SW books that I have are the movie novels.

I also liked Darth Bane POD. It's interesting to see the motivations of various Sith. Can't wait to read the sequel, though I'll probably wait 'til paperback.

I really enjoyed reading Darth Bane. I wasn't too sure I wanted to get into his head, but once I began, I couldn't put it down. I really recommend it to anyone who hasn't red it yet (or, for those of us who have-- a re-read.).

M86, better get that copy. It is THAT GOOD!!!

Loved POD and can't wait for "Rule of Two" (working title?). Glad you decided to pick it up Deej! I really love what Drew K has brought to the EU with his writing style. I think his game writing experience really offers a different edge to the way his novel form comes out. Good stuff.

I thought POD was a great read ... really had me all the way through with learning this relatively "new" character (to most of the EU novels, anyway). Looking forward to the sequel at the end of the year.

You've stepped into a wonderful universe, deej! :D

Darth Bane really was a good book (despite it being about a Dark Side individual! ;)), and I think adds quite a bit to the Star Wars galaxy.

I don't want to go into any real detail for those who haven't read it, but think they might, so I'll just leave it at that for now.

Happy Reading! :D
