Some Amazing Finds!
This blog is really gonna be just a preliminary but I couldn't wait to share these finds with my fellow geeks!

I was working at my company office last week helping out with a few things and while looking through their back store room of supplies stumbled across a box full of old camera parts.

Two items sitting right on the top grabbed my attention immediately...upon picking them up I took a closer look at each one and my suspicions were confirmed!

These were indeed vintage flash bulb guns from the early 70's, which were the basis of what we now know as the classic designs for the original lightsaber props from the first Star Wars movie!

I casually asked my manager and he said go ahead and take them! :D!!!

This Graflex Flash Gun is the same exact model used to create Luke Skywalkers Lightsaber from A New Hope!

The detail on it is fantastic, right down to the "emitter array!"

I have ordered a conversion kit from a fan seller on eBay that will help me turn this item into an authentic looking movie prop! When that is done I will of course post pictures for you.

The second flash gun I found on first look resembles Darth Vaders lightsaber BUT on closer inspection it turns out that while it is the same make (a Heiland) it is a different model. Also, as it was only a 2 cell battery style and not the original 3 cell, it comes up a little short to be a lightsaber... ;)

Still, it has some great detail and will make a fun custom saber. I've already started work on making it in my own style....again, when that's done I will post pictures so expect a follow up blog to this one in the near future, k?

I can't wait to go back to the office and hunt around again; I'd love to see if they have any more of these suckers laying around!

to be more specific; theses weren't JUST the inspiration...in the case of the Graflex one I found, it is exactly the same item they used to MAKE the original Luke saber, all they did was dress it up with some rubber grips, a plastic baubble on the "switch" housing and some chrome tape to cover up the imprinted lettering...thats IT. Ive already ordered these items from ebay to finish mine and when its done it will be an EXACT copy of the prop used in the film!

How awesome is that?!

in the case of the Graflex one I found, it is exactly the same item they used to MAKE the original Luke saber,

Wow! The similarity between the one you found and the Luke hilt are identical. What an incredible find!

Yep the 1940s graflex flashbulb attachment exactly the same thing used in the star wars films. vader's saber were also flash bulb holders and were Heiland flashbulb holders.

These go for big money on eBay so you made out like a bandit my friend.

.... now if you could find a vintage British grenade and gas burner piece you could make an Obi-wan saber.

Cool! I actually had a find at work recently, too. Somebody was digging through the research library and came across a 1983 issue of People with Carrie Fisher and Jabba the Hutt on the cover. Too hilarious!

had no idea that is what they used!

I remember reading that they used these items BUT never having seen one, I assumed they had REALLY dressed the things up with little parts etc. for the films, so seeing the Luke ANH saber almost entirely exact just laying there in a box kinda blew me away too!

The similarity between the one you found and the Luke hilt are identical

yeah, like I said, basically its just a matter of a few simple parts to make it exactly like the film prop, and I have them on order! :D!

1940s graflex flashbulb attachment

while there are ones that date back to the 40's I dont think these are QUITE that old. A quick Google showed that the Graflex company was in business until the mid 70's so Im assuming these, as well as the ones Lucas originally used, date from around then too.

As soon as I saw that first picture

yeah, well imagine MY reaction seeing these laying in a box of parts, I had the very same feeling...:D

Have a fun time customizing them

I will. I intend to make the Luke style an exact match to the film, while the other I want to customize in my own style...which has been trickier than I thought. I started some work on it but Im not sure Im happy with the results; I may scrap it and start from scratch...
