Fanboys: a brief (and spoiler free) review...

Ok, before I get to the Fanboys review, my apologies to all of my friends and fellow bloggers here. I have been neglect in keeping up with the blogs lately, for many different reasons but they are really no excuse, and I will try harder to get back into the swing of things here as I truly miss you all.

Speaking of missing my fellow geeks, let's talk about the film "Fanboys."

I managed to go see it last week on the opening weekend and I must say I was disappointed in the turn out at the theater: I was hoping for some fellow fanboys to share the experience with and instead found a theater not even half full, which I found rather sad.

The film itself, though, is a LOT of fun and a loving tribute to US, the fans, male and female, of George Lucas's GFFA.

The story centers on 5 friends who decide to take a cross country trip to break into Lucasfilm Ranch and steal copy of the unreleased Episode I film for their dying friend who will not make it to the films theatrical release date.

While this sounds like it could be depressing, it is treated in a fashion that keeps the film light hearted and fun without being disrespectful or insulting.

The film is zany in some spots, tongue in cheek in others, but always treats the Star Wars fans with respect even when poking fun at some of our more interesting quirks.

Some great cameos and LOTS of Star Wars and other film references, some obvious and some not quite so obvious, make the film a treat for anyone who loves a good obscure film reference.

It will also make you misty eyed for the days of camping out for a Star Wars film or wandering around a Star Wars Con or just hanging out with a group of your fellow geeks.

It is rated PG-13 for some crude language and humor, and a few drug references, so parents may want to take that into consideration.

I hope this film gets expanded into wide release because I think it would be a fun experience for Star Wars fans to get together in large groups to go see, but even if it winds up just going to DVD in a couple of weeks make sure you rent or buy a copy, invite some fellow geeks over, and enjoy this film.

Sounds like a blast! I'd go see it but we don't travel much, well, practically not at all, so I'm looking forward to seeing it on DVD!

So glad someone finally posted a Fanboys review here on the blogs--I've been waiting for one since the movie came out!

And I'm glad to hear you liked it, Deej!

I haven't laughed so hard at a new movie in a loooooong time. This movie was not only hysterical but as you said, it treated SW fans with respect. Even people who are not die-hard SW fans can enjoy it.

I am so glad, after all the battling about the dying friend storyline, that it was left in. It gave the movie heart.

it would be a fun experience for Star Wars fans to get together in large groups to go see
Absolutely! I saw it with some of the bloggers here, and that's the best way to see it and share it.

I want to see it (insert crying yodacon!)

I went to the CIV panel two years ago and have been dying to see this film ever since. I saw the poster at a local theater, but alas, it's not coming yet.

This is such a great film & I'm thrilled to hear it is going to be released in a few more cities! Kyle Newman is a huge fanboy himself, so you know it's going to be true to us geeks! ;)

The best thing we as fans can do is to GO SEE IT if it's near, so other fans will get the chance later!

I saw it with my fellow fanGIRLS and had a blast!!!!!! :D

Fun! Fun!! Fun!!!

I went down to the Windy City to see "Fanboys" (not fangirls??? okay, the characters were male, but one girl did eventually join them. :)) with friends, and it was fun to laugh with them, my fellow Star Wars geeks. :D Dare I say it was fun to see "me" up there on the screen? ; I recognized myself so often. :) If one can't laugh at oneself, it can be hard to find humor in other aspects of life. ;)

I can't wait until it comes out on dvd. It will join the ranks of my other silly Star Wars spoofs/fan films. I love the fact that this part of my collection continues to grow and grow and grow. :D
