Valentine's Day, and a person's thoughts turn to those they love...

Love, one of the most basic, essential human emotions...right from birth a child NEEDS the love of caring parents for proper physical and mental growth, and throughout their growth through adolescence and eventual adulthood.

Love, an emotion so powerful it could be called instinct, an instinct that draws us into friendships, relationships, and allows for the continuation of the species.
One could argue that LOVE is the one emotion that any civilized society MUST have in order to continue its existence.

So why would the Jedi, an order that considers itself wise, an order that considers itself protectors of the universe, FORBID such a basic emotion as LOVE?

Oh sure, love CAN be a negative force if improperly used, and yes, love by its very nature forms attachments, which the Jedi also forbid.

But the negative RISKS of love are far outweighed by its positive influences on the universe, so what could POSSIBLY have scared the Jedi so much about love that they would FORBID it?

Why would the Jedi take children at a tender age that NEEDED love from nurturing, loving parents and instead place them in a cold, emotionless environment?

Why would the Jedi FORBID personal and romantic relationships, and instruct their Padawans to DENY basic, simple, HUMAN emotions?

The Star Wars Saga is, when you boil it down, all about LOVE.

It shows the negative effects of love, and more importantly the negative effects of being DENIED love, in the example of Anakin, who was taken from the love of his mother, forbid to love a woman he cared for, and in the end, allowed his fear of LOSING love to destroy him and unravel a Galaxy.

But then we have the example of Luke, a young man who felt love and passion so strongly that it sent him to rescue a young princess he didn't even know, and start a journey that would eventually save the Universe from tyranny.

A man who loved his friends enough to risk everything, including his own life, for them, and for their cause.

And a man who loved a father enough to forgive all the evil he had done and bring him BACK from the Darkside.

So one could say that love almost destroyed the Galaxy, but in the end it was love that SAVED it instead.

Back to the real world for a bit, with a story I promised a friend I would tell here...


As some of you know, I am a mobile Disc Jockey, and the bulk of my business is of course weddings.

The company I work for does several functions a month where we gather potential clients, mostly bride & grooms to be, together in a hall somewhere to give them a chance to view our services and hopefully book us for their weddings.
Us DJ's even perform some dances and other fun stuff to show our skills and give them an idea of what we can do for their reception.

Anyway, at one of these events just last week, we were approached by a gentleman who wanted to surprise his girlfriend by proposing to her there, that night!

This was a first for us and we jumped at the chance, but we needed to come up with a good idea to set it up right.

I came up with a plan: during our presentation I would announce that it was time to draw some names and give away some prizes...we normally do that at the END of the event so it wasn't totally out of the norm.

So I pretended to draw a name from the hat and announce the unaware young lady as our first prize winner of the evening!

As such, I told her, she was winning a SPECIAL prize, and made her come forward and stand facing my DJ stage with her back to the audience, while I instructed my fellow DJ's to "bring out her prize."

Meanwhile, pre-planned, all my fellow DJ's lined up side by side behind her, and then her boyfriend came up behind them and got down on one knee.

When they were all ready, I instructed her to turn around to "see her prize!"

She turned, and the DJ's slowly stepped aside to reveal her man on his knees as I started a romantic song the young man had asked me to play for her.

The moment went PERFECT, and ...she said YES!

The audience loved it and of course burst into applause when she accepted.

I've done a LOT of weddings in my career but that was the first time I ever DJ'd a proposal LOL.
