Happy Valentines Day
Valentine's Day, and a person's thoughts turn to those they love...

Love, one of the most basic, essential human emotions...right from birth a child NEEDS the love of caring parents for proper physical and mental growth, and throughout their growth through adolescence and eventual adulthood.

Love, an emotion so powerful it could be called instinct, an instinct that draws us into friendships, relationships, and allows for the continuation of the species.
One could argue that LOVE is the one emotion that any civilized society MUST have in order to continue its existence.

So why would the Jedi, an order that considers itself wise, an order that considers itself protectors of the universe, FORBID such a basic emotion as LOVE?

Oh sure, love CAN be a negative force if improperly used, and yes, love by its very nature forms attachments, which the Jedi also forbid.

But the negative RISKS of love are far outweighed by its positive influences on the universe, so what could POSSIBLY have scared the Jedi so much about love that they would FORBID it?

Why would the Jedi take children at a tender age that NEEDED love from nurturing, loving parents and instead place them in a cold, emotionless environment?

Why would the Jedi FORBID personal and romantic relationships, and instruct their Padawans to DENY basic, simple, HUMAN emotions?

The Star Wars Saga is, when you boil it down, all about LOVE.

It shows the negative effects of love, and more importantly the negative effects of being DENIED love, in the example of Anakin, who was taken from the love of his mother, forbid to love a woman he cared for, and in the end, allowed his fear of LOSING love to destroy him and unravel a Galaxy.

But then we have the example of Luke, a young man who felt love and passion so strongly that it sent him to rescue a young princess he didn't even know, and start a journey that would eventually save the Universe from tyranny.

A man who loved his friends enough to risk everything, including his own life, for them, and for their cause.

And a man who loved a father enough to forgive all the evil he had done and bring him BACK from the Darkside.

So one could say that love almost destroyed the Galaxy, but in the end it was love that SAVED it instead.

Back to the real world for a bit, with a story I promised a friend I would tell here...

As some of you know, I am a mobile Disc Jockey, and the bulk of my business is of course weddings.

The company I work for does several functions a month where we gather potential clients, mostly bride & grooms to be, together in a hall somewhere to give them a chance to view our services and hopefully book us for their weddings.
Us DJ's even perform some dances and other fun stuff to show our skills and give them an idea of what we can do for their reception.

Anyway, at one of these events just last week, we were approached by a gentleman who wanted to surprise his girlfriend by proposing to her there, that night!

This was a first for us and we jumped at the chance, but we needed to come up with a good idea to set it up right.

I came up with a plan: during our presentation I would announce that it was time to draw some names and give away some prizes...we normally do that at the END of the event so it wasn't totally out of the norm.

So I pretended to draw a name from the hat and announce the unaware young lady as our first prize winner of the evening!

As such, I told her, she was winning a SPECIAL prize, and made her come forward and stand facing my DJ stage with her back to the audience, while I instructed my fellow DJ's to "bring out her prize."

Meanwhile, pre-planned, all my fellow DJ's lined up side by side behind her, and then her boyfriend came up behind them and got down on one knee.

When they were all ready, I instructed her to turn around to "see her prize!"

She turned, and the DJ's slowly stepped aside to reveal her man on his knees as I started a romantic song the young man had asked me to play for her.

The moment went PERFECT, and ...she said YES!

The audience loved it and of course burst into applause when she accepted.

I've done a LOT of weddings in my career but that was the first time I ever DJ'd a proposal LOL.

To all my friends here that I have made over the years, I wish you all a Happy Valentine's Day and hope you get to spend it with the one you love, whoever they may be. :)

What a cute story! Thankfully she said yes :p

I don't wanna argue what you said about love in Star Wars much, but I never got that the Jedi forbid love at all. Anakin was the only one I've heard say that (and the Force only knows how mistaken he was about a great many things lol!). Love manifests in many ways, but at it's core it comes from pure compassion, and I think the Jedi were closer to that kind of purity than your average galactic denizen.

No where does it say that Jedi can't love, or that they live emotionless... they just don't let their emotions control their actions. Don't forget what Obi-Wan said in Ep II, "Don't let your personal feelings get in the way!"

I think the Jedi cared for each other very deeply, and certainly they cared about others. They just tried to put others ahead of themselves. Anakin was too selfish to do that, so he gave a love a bad name. LOL

Great blog deej. I think the Jedi were off course in their view of attachments, but I think they did hold a lot of love in their hearts. Love for peace, harmony and respect, as well as love for each other, in a non-romantic way of course!

And the proposal you DJ'd sounds great ... a nice surpise for the bride-to-be. Great job!

Awwwww! What a great way to propose!

You have a good Valentine's day!!

I think the Jedi thought of themselves as family and forgot just how valuable a mother and father's love is for younglings. As for Anakin, they were IMO foolish to expect him to not ever want to see his mother. I don't get their reasoning for not letting him.

What a great story! Get your love groove on!

BTW jkthunder... I think it was Padme who said love was forbidden for a Jedi. Anakin wouldn't have said that, he was too busy trying to get into her pants.

. . .he was too busy. . .

Ah, Stooge, so right! :^O And after Padmé's comment, Anakin explained, ". . .Compassion, which I would define as unconditional love, is central to a Jedi's life, so you might say we're encouraged to love." Of course, Anakin was putting his own spin on love, thinking of his growing love for Padmé, but love is love any way you slice it.

In the end, one must determine to what lengths s/he will go in the name of love. It can inspire one to deeds of great heroics, empassioned self-sacrifice and, at times, disaster. It can be the impetus for wanting nothing more than to put a smile on someone's face. :)

It is the energy that binds the galaxy together. :D

That was a great story, deej, and, as a romantic at heart that I consider you to be (why else would you throw yourself into your work as you do? :)), I can imagine in my mind's eye what that evening was like. :) While I'm leery of public proposals (not that they have to be private. It has more to do with the fact that the, in most cases, ;) groom-to-be is hedging his bet that his intended will say "yes" only if he "uses" a public setting.), this is something they'll remember for the rest of their lives. :D How wonderful that you were a part of their special event. :)

Great blog, deej, and wonderful tale! :)
