Funny how thoughts run through your mind in those hazy first moments of morning when your just waking up but still laying in bed waiting to come back into full consciousness....
When first explained in Ep. IV by Ben Kenobi, The Force was described as a "an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together."
Sorta Quasi-mystical stuff....
Many years later we learn a much more scientific approach to the Force.
Qui Gon tells us that It's midichlorians, a microscopic symbiotic creature that are responsible for ones abilities in The Force...the higher the midichlorian count, the stronger one is in The Force.
Very scientific approach this time.
My goal here isnt to debate the "mystical VS scientific" nature of The Force, but simply to project my thoughts on just how it affected the Jedi and their USE of it.
We have seen the Jedi do some AMAZING things through use of The Force: Strength, speed, agility, the ability to move even the largest of objects with a thought and the ability to manipulate the thoughts of the weak minded with a simple twist of a phrase.
many even had the ability to foresee future events, or at least get a glimpse of them.
So why were the Jedi not invincible? How come at some times they showed almost "godlike" abilities and yet at others managed to prove weak, fallible, and ultimately defeatable?
If Yoda could lift an X-Wing from a swamp with just his mind, why couldnt he pull every enemy ship out of they sky and destroy them?
if the Jedi were able to use the Force to leap great distances and in some cases seem almost to FLY, why couldnt Mace Windu save himself from his fall on Corascant?
My feelings on it are this:
Think of the Jedi as a rechargable battery, and midichlorians as the energy that charges it.
The stronger the battery, the more energy it can hold, but eventually even the strongest one can be drained and will need some time to recharge before it can be used again.
So when a Jedi uses The Force during battle, he is essentially draining his or her "energy" and eventually will need to recharge before being able to perform more feats of power.
Perhaps its why young Obi-Wan couldnt "speed run" to catch up to his master and Darth Maul during their battle and got stuck behind the energy shield. He had already used up too much energy to be able to call on that particular ability at that moment.
I wonder if, when the Jedi (or Sith for that matter) called upon the Force, if they were expending their own personal storage of midichlorians outward from themselves or if they were using theirs to affect and interact with the midichlorians present in whatever they were fighting against...again, back to Yoda, did he "project" his midichlorians to the X-Wing to lift it from the water, or was he manipulating the midichlorians WITHIN the ship to lift it?
I am leaning towards the former; I dont know if its been discussed or documented anywhere officially but I tend to think inanimate objects, non living objects, do NOT have midichlorians IN them, so the Jedi would have to use midichlorians from within to affect an inanimate object in any way.
This would also support my "rechargable battery" hypothesis.
It would also explain how Palpatine could hide himself and his manipulations from the Jedi...if the Force is indeed an "energy field" then Palpatine, while not being able to STOP the Jedi from USING it, could divert it by "rewiring" the flow and diverting it AROUND him, kind of like the way an electrician can divert the path of electricity with a few simple wires.
Im sure there have been other discussions and theories on the subject, these are just a few ideas that popped into MY head out of the blue, so I figured id write them down.
Feel free to post your own theories, or correct any mistakes or flaws in mine.
