I'm sure when George Lucas started his film making career, he never in his wildest dreams thought he would become world famous and forever known for what is really, when you boil it all down, ONE movie.
He has stated in interviews before how he has "come to terms" with the fact that no matter what else he does in his career, he will be forever known as George "Star Wars" Lucas.
I often wonder where he would be without Star Wars.
What if he never had the idea? Or could never get a studio to back it?
What if it got shut down in the middle of production due to all the problems with budget and lack of technology?
What if it was a colossal box office flop?
Or, what if it just did OK...made a few bucks, but not enough to warrant a sequel, let alone two and three prequels plus countless side projects?
More interesting though, I think, is the question of whether George wonders about these things.
As a film maker, I'm sure he can't help but wonder where he would be today if Star Wars hadn't taken over his life.
Oh sure, he probably wouldn't be as RICH, but let's leave money OUT of the equation and focus on career: Would he have had a successful movie career anyway?
What kind of projects would he have done instead? Mysteries? Love Stories? Comedies?
Would he have a bigger body of work if he hadn't spend the bulk of his career focused on Star Wars?
Does he have regrets? Or is he content with where he is?
I compare it to song writers or rock groups who have that one BIG HIT and then basically milk the rest of their career off of it, not so much by choice but because the fans won't accept them for anything else. Oh sure, they may release several other albums, and they may be GOOD or even GREAT, but at the end of the night, the fans at the show still wanna hear the HIT!
Or what about the actor who winds up getting world famous for ONE film role, and then despite whatever else he or she does can never quite escape the shadow of that role?
Not being an artist myself, I don't know that I could relate. I've always said I WISH I had that one hit song in me, or that one lucky film role, and that I could be happy and content to live the rest of my life off of it...but I am essentially a lazy person and don't have a creative bone in my body, so milking a career off of one hit would be perfect for me, LOL.
I just hope that at this point in his life, George isn't afraid to move on and try new things.
As we get older, it's so easy to remain in the comfort spot, to stick with what we KNOW.
He has stated that after his involvement in the TV show, he WILL move on and try new things, and I hope he does, he deserves that chance.
Whether we the fans follow him there remains to be seen I guess.
