Obi-Wan was given an order by master Yoda to "destroy the Sith", and yes he certainly did injure his former padawan, but why not finish the job on Vader?? Why leave him scorched and screaming with agony? Why leave him to be rebuilt and take his place at the Emperor's side?? My insight into this matter...(OOOHHH...My first blog!!)
After Master Jedi and Slayer of Darth Maul, Obi-Wan Kenobi, stood his "high ground" and severed Anakin's remaining
REAL limbs, why did he not finish him off? I would think that Obi-Wan would have had enough compassion for his old friend to end his suffering, and save him from the torture of being burned alive. I have a few thoughts on WHY Obi-Wan may have left him to die slowly beside the lake of fire, but C'MON...Look at what a difference it would have made had he ended Lord Vader's treachery right there....
As we all know, Jedi are not allowed to kill unarmed foes, this could be one of the reasons Anakin was left alive, or it could be that Obi-Wan just could not bring himself to
actually killing Anakin. When he sliced and diced Vader, Kenobi was merely protecting himself, I don't know if Obi-Wan had it in him to walk down the hill and run his saber through Anakin's chest. Or MAYBE Obi-Wan thought Anakin was as good as dead and Obi-Wan thought Vader should suffer for what he had done (I don't think so but you never know...). Now don't get me wrong, I am a fan of Lord Vader and the Sith, I actually "root" for the Dark Side (oddly enough), but I wish I knew exactly why Ol' Ben didn't just save himself a lot of trouble (and a lightsaber duel WAY beyond his prime) and KILL DARTH VADER!!!!
Ultimately, Vader was left alive because I really don't think that Episode IV, V, and VI would have made much sense had Anakin been killed. Still, Anakin was spared and eventually brought balance to the force (In my opinion, when just considering the movies and not the EU), as was prophesized.
