Hi,
It's been a little while since my last blog but I can hold my tongue no longer.
Since I wrote this
blog, when a few others posted blogs along a similar vein and as the release of
Order 66 came and went. I've noticed that the debate about the seemingly contrasting roles played in the GFFA by the Jedi and Mandos during the Clone Wars has taken on a life of it's own.
I know that we are all passionate about SW, in fact it could be said that the community here on the blogs are amongst the most passionate, but I've still been surprised as to the level to which this argument has reached/sunk.
I hope he won't mind my quoting him but in his comment on this
blog, Commanderbly hits the proverbial nail on the head
"I find it strange that everyone feels the emotions of fictional characters = the emotions and opinions of the author".
I agree entirely otherwise how could any author accurately portray the personalities of multiple characters. Let's not forget that these are not morality plays but adventure stories. Some of the vitriol I have read personally directed at authors, one in particular, has astonished me, some of it from bloggers from whom I would have expected better. Whilst you or I may not agree with a point of view expressed by an author in a fictional work, we cannot deny that person the right to express that point of view, otherwise where are we?
One of the things I have most enjoyed since I have begun reading the books based in the EU, is that they offer me a view of the wider GFFA, they present characters, locations and stories that I would other wise have missed.
These tales are supposed to recount the experiences of the characters portrayed in them, a good author can do that, can make us empathize with a character whose views we don't share and who's motives for their actions we don't understand.
We don't criticise Drew Karpyshyn for his 'Jedi bashing' do we? No, we allow him to give his characters a voice of their own.
I have enjoyed reading novels from both sides of the coin, I personally love the pro-Mando Republic Commando series but I'm also loving the Clone Wars TV series, which shows the Jedi acting with compassion towards the clones. Can I love both? Yes, I can and do.
Yaini Fett rightly says
"My point is they are both awesome"
And as Obi-Wan once said, "What I have told you was true... from a certain point of view."
And in the case of the authors expanding the universe of the GFFA, I think we need to remember that.
