Together we can rule the galaxy as father and son.

Did Vader have a death wish or was he smarter than that?
Hi Everyone,
I watched the OT again recently and was reminded off some things that have never quite sat right with me.

The first is about Vader's decisions regarding Luke.

VADER: If he could be turned, he would become a powerful ally.

EMPEROR: Yes. Yes. He would be a great asset. Can it be done?

VADER: He will join us or die, my master

I'm assuming that, in the intervening years between ROTS and TESB, the Emperor elaborated upon the Sith philosophies to his apprentice, and so Vader knew about the rule of two.
They knew Luke was becoming powerful and was beginning to pose a threat to them. So I understand his attempt to turn Luke to the Dark side and his attempt to get Luke to become his ally so that they can overthrow the Emperor together, but having failed to do that why does he then agree with the Emperor's plans.

EMPEROR: In time he will seek you out. And when he does, you must bring him before me. He has grown strong. Only together can we turn him to the dark side of the Force.

Surely Vader must see that he's signing his own death warrant if he brings Luke before the Emperor and Luke can actually be turned to the Dark side. He must realize that as Luke is more powerful in the Force than he is, then he will become surplus to requirements. The Emperor would choose Luke over Vader any day of the week.
The prospect of Luke turning to theDark side is a very real one, during the duel aboard the Death star Luke does almost give in to his anger on a couple of occasions.
Or does he believe that if Luke is turned to the Dark side and the Emperor then attempts to kill Vader, that his son's compassion for him will mean that he would intervene and kill the Emperor, therefore allowing them to rule the Galaxy as Father and Son. sounds familiar.

All told all of these outcomes seem unlikely, in truth I think the best course of action for Vader would have been to kill Luke rather than take him to the Emperor, I know that sounds a bit callous but it would be the only course of action that would stand any realistic chance of Vader coming out of it alive.
I know your gonna say 'but Luke's his son, he couln't just kill him'. Well it's either that or deliver him to the most evil man in the galaxy.

I don't know it just doesn't seem right, you could say I have a bad feeling about it. Groan :8}

I'll hopefully blog about the other thing tomorrow
