Luke's recklessness
Hi everyone,
If there's one thing to be said about taking the first tentative steps and actually starting blogging is that it makes you think about SW more, or at least it certainly has me.

Take this morning for instance; I was lying in bed at about 5.30 waiting for the alarm to go off to tell me to get up for work, when I had a bit of a revelation.
Why? You may ask.
I know, I really should have gotten up and made a cup of coffee instead of just lying there.
Oh, the revelation.
Well, it struck me that Yoda's assessment of Luke, in that he was too reckless was absolutely correct.
Now I know that Yoda was referring to Luke dashing off to Bespin to rescue his friends from Vader's trap, and we all know how that turned out. No I'm thinking of the second attempt, the one to rescue Han from Jabba, who BTW I can't wait to see more of in the Clone Wars, he looks so cool in the trailer.
It seems that Luke didn't learn his lesson.
I mean, talk about putting all your eggs in one basket; you've got Han blind, Chewie in a cell, Leia chained to Jabba, Luke captured and Lando in the worst disguise in the Galaxy. The whole plan relied entirely on R2 being able to return Luke's lightsabre and yes I know everyone's favourite little astromech came through in the end, but all it would have taken would be one sweep of one of those massive arms by Jabba and the whole thing would have come crashing down. After all Jabba wasn't the calmest of beings, was he?

Or at least that is how it appeared to me at 5.30 this morning.;

And another thing whist I'm on. Why did Luke have to face Vader in order to become a Jedi Knight? Surely this wasn't the norm, I mean all the other Jedi Knights didn't have to face either a Sith Lord or their father in order to attain Knighthood did they?

Perhaps this is some dark secret that I've stumbled upon; perhaps this is why Jedi were taken from their families at such a young age. It's so that in the future the Council can reveal their parents' identity and location and then say, "Off you go then, you must face your father".
This would seem a little unfair, what with the Padawans having received years of lightsabre training but I suppose if the Padawans didn't come back well then they weren't really up to it in the first place.:D

You wait for the alarm? I dread the alarm and get as much sleep as possible. ;)

Yep, Luke sure didn't seem to be looking ahead much. He didn't see the consequences of his actions.

and Lando in the worst disguise in the Galaxy.

Yep.

I love revelations like that...I usually have mine in the shower, I don't know why but I seem to do my best thinking there.

As for the Tatooine mission, I mean...wasn't Leia supposed to save Han? I didn't think that they both MEANT to get caught by Jabba. Did they? Now I'm beginning to think. C-3PO and R2 were the first sent to the palace so R2 had Lukes lightsaber that whole time. Maybe Luke played it more by ear once Leia, Han, and Chewie all got caught. You would think that Lando, with the "worst disguise" would be the first to get caught.

And I'm not sure of the actual specifics as to why Luke had to face his father but I do believe it had something to do with Vader being a very powerful Sith Lord and Luke being the only jedi left. Just a guess.

Fun entry!

Luke having to face Vader was his Trial. As you know, all Jedi must go through the Trials, this was his. By facing down both the Emperor and Vader, not to mention the lure of the Dark Side, only then did he actually acheive Knighthood.

Reckless, eh? When you began down this road, my first thought was that you had done something reckless . . . like stay in bed way past the time you should have, and that threw off your entire day!

All I have to say is that we all need a little recklessness in our lives from time to time. Not necessarily to put one in peril. Just to shake life up a bit, to keep our lives from getting ho-hum, stuck in a rut. Even Luke.

Like his buddy Han, I can imagine Luke at least thinking something like, "Don't ever tell me the odds!" when he went off on his wild adventures. ;) And don't forget that R2 was nowhere near Jabba when he cast Luke's lightsaber skyward. (I would imagine, too, that Luke's command of the Force had a great deal to do with it landing safely in his outstretched hand. :))

As for his final test to become a full-fledged Jedi Knight . . .

(the end . . . I hope! ;))

To reach the acme of (at least one facet of) one's life, one oftentimes must face - and overcome - that which s/he does not want to face. For Luke, it was facing his father, and the knowledge that the most feared individual in the galaxy was his father and the fact that he (Luke) recognized there was at least some of his father (and his father's tendencies) in him. I think he did that remarkably well, proving one didn't have to take the same route that Anakin had done 20 years earlier.

LOL - my revelations come while I'm doing my hair in the morning! :^O

Why did Luke have to face Vader in order to become a Jedi Knight?
I have no proof of this, but perhaps it was putting duty above family? Part of Luke's "job" as a Jedi was to destroy the Sith and fight evil, no matter what - even if that Sith or evil person was close to him.

Another alternative is that Yoda knew that Luke needed to be tested by the dark side and then pass the test. This would be a really good test: join your father in the dark or stay in the light and either kill him or be killed.

Nice blog!
