 | Mass Effect, Robot Chicken, Plagueis... |
Wow - just seems like I was blogging last week, but when I look it's been over a month! Time keeps on slipping, slipping, slipping... into the future.
(If you get that reference you're probably what I consider a "first generation" SW fan who saw ANH in the theatres.)
So I'm going to try something a bit less formal this time around for my blog and just power through a bunch of topics. (I can do that, right? I mean, come on... it's a blog!)
TOPIC THE FIRST
Buy my stuff! Make me rich!
Okay, I recently got the first batch of sales numbers for Path of Destruction. The results? Well, let's just say that I sold more hardcover copies of this book than I did total copies of any other one novel I've worked on... and they were all paperbacks at 1/3 the price. And those numbers will (hopefully) jump when the paperback hits stores in June. (Star Wars fans - we are legion!) I'm really curious to see what kind of sales numbers Bane can pull in when he's working at a paperback price point.
But before PoD comes out in paperback I've got ANOTHER sci-fi novel coming out. Mass Effect: Revelation - a prequel to the Mass Effect video game I'm working on over at BioWare - hits shelves May 1st. It's not Star Wars, but I think it's a compelling science fiction universe and a kick-### story. So if you like my writing style, you might want to check it out. There's a free preview of the prologue over at www.masseffect.com if you want a sneak peek.
One more time to subliminaly burn this info into your brain:
MASS EFFECT:REVELATION ON SALE MAY 1st
(Hope that's not too subtle.)
TOPIC 2
The Tragedy of Plagueis the Wise:
Not to add my voice to the din of the disappointed, but I'm bummed the book isn't coming out. I was looking forward to it. Having said that, it's a little easier for me to understand because I know how complicated it is to try and organize an entire universe... especially one as massive as Star Wars has become over THREE DECADES!
When we were kicking around early ideas for KOTOR we had a subplot that involved clones - keep in mind, we were working on this in 2000, bofore AotC was announced - and we got a firm "Sorry, you can't do that," from the people at LucasArts. Of course, they couldn't tell us why clones were off limits... but when the movie came out it all made sense. They didn't want us to steal their thunder, and they have to protect an entire universe, whereas we were worrying about a single project. So even though I feel bad the powers that be have gone mum on the Munn, I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and trust they know what they're doing.
TOPIC 3
Robot Chicken does Star Wars!
I love Robot Chicken. Their skit with the Emperor getting the phone call from Darth Vader was the first Robot Chicken skit I ever saw (YouTube, of course), and I was hooked. I've been working some heinous hours these past few months at BioWare, and coming home and flicking on the Teletoon Detour (Canada's version of Adult Swim) and watching Robot Chicken and ATHF is one of the only things keeping me sane during this stretch. (At least until the golf courses open here. We still had snow in mid-April. How is that fair? I demand spring, damnit!)
I was down in LA recently and I was lucky enough to meet Seth Green in person. (Look at me - dropping names like a Hollywood pro!) I'm happy to say the guy is WAY COOL. Very down to earth, really sharp and intelligent, very approachable - and of course up-roariously funny. So to have a guy like that tackling the Star Wars universe fills me with a sense of impending hilarity.
Okay, that's it. Three topics, one blog. (Maybe I should have stretched this out longer? Nah.)

I really liked your Darth Bane book (and am one of the many who bought the hardcover, and will buy the pbck as well because it will have a preview of Death Star in it!), and will read the excerpt to your Mass Effect-sequel later this day... If I like it, I will probably buy it because I like your writing-style...
Hope you are assigned another Star Wars-book in the future, though...

I have been meaning to get to your book for some time now, just havent had the chance, but all the reviews Ive seen have been positive and Im truly looking forward to it.
I actually prefer hard cover books: Bigger pages, easier to read and they hold up better over time and look better on a bookshelf. But I understand the need for paperbacks too.
I was looking forward to the Plagueis book as well...maybe in the future I hope.

Well, let's just say that I sold more hardcover copies of this book than I did total copies of any other one novel I've worked on...
You're welcome! I must say the book was well worth the price, for me. I was not sure how much I would enjoy a book where the hero is actually a bad guy.
I am very sad about the Plagueis novel. The main reason I picked up PoD was in anticipation of that book. The problem was that it was announced (at least here at SW.com) and not a rumor that turned out to be false. Oh well I am over it and there are plenty of other books to read.

PATH is now the next in my stack. I just had to get through some mythology stuff I was reading first.
Thanks for posting and being a part of the community.
They will have to fold on the Plagueis. Maybe not soon, but sometime. We all want it. HERE is something about the namesake of this character, though. Shameless plug.

It's good to hear that POD has been a success for you. I bought the hardback and it was very much a good buy. It was probably the most fun I've had reading a Star Wars book over the last few years. Your other books are on my list of things to check out when I can. Here's to continued success!

I just discovered your blog from the Featured Blog of the Day, and I don't know how to say this, but you're awesome! At the very least, by association! ( )
Reasons you're awesome:
I adore KOTOR.
I'm super excited about Mass Effect (largely because of how awesome KOTOR is an my love of Bioware)
You work for Bioware.
I've been itching to read Darth Bane, but I don't do hardcovers. You'll be getting at least one more sale out of me once it hits paperback.
In my experience, Canadians are hilarious.
You like RPGs.
You like Robot Chicken.
I totally agree with you about the Plagueis novel.
I hope you don't mind me feeding your ego.
Anyways, I'm very glad you're blogging.
