Yes. Windu was confirmed dead officially in the Depth Commentary on the ROTS DVD-ROM.

It's not the fall that kills someone, it's the sudden stop. In this case, Windu is falling thousands of feet--much ####her then when he jumped off the balcony on Geonosis--after just getting blasted by a large amount of lightning and getting his had chopped off. I don't really think he had the ability to gather the Force around himself to stop his fall. Windu is DEAD!!!

Yeah i agree with gencrs too.. Jedi can survive the falling of great heights by gathering the Force around them. Normally Windu could do this pretty easily I suppose.. But the lightning went straight to his heart and his hand got chopped off... So that makes it pretty clear... Dead..

i think he died because even if he didnt die from the lightning and stuff, what could he hold on to

Is Mace Windu really dead?

Short Answer: Yes.

Long Answer: Getting a burst of high voltage electricity through your skull and then falling about a hundred miles is enough to kill anyone. So yes, beyond any doubt, he is dead.

I must admit he probaly is dead but you must look at all the facts... In the entire history of the jedi they have been known to survive much worse fates. I mean look at anikin a prime example, had all his limbs cut off set on fire by lava and left to die but he still stuck around so whos to say windu couldnt survive a small fall and a hand getting cut off. This debate has been going around ever since the movie came out. I once saw a really good post relating to if he did survive what happened. This was fairly believeable considering we know that his jedi technique combines the darkside's presence and the lightside. After the fall of the temple he goes into hiding and training eventually he hunts down the whereabouts of yoda he travels to dagobah and meets yoda in the tree cave that we see in episode 4 there he attempts to bring yoda to his cause of wanting revenge on the sith but yoda knows better and can sense the darkside within him and refuses. Angered further windu attacks yoda with the sith belief that if your not with me your against me. Yoda is forced to kill windu thus making the tree cave a place of the darkside and thus this is what luke senses later on in the 4th film and why when he enters yoda gives a sad sigh..

Luke also had a lot of force lightning shot though him and survived...perhaps Mace directed himself to a passing speeder and made his getaway...

Actually, many years before Mace was even born Yoda chased a dark Jedi to Daggobah and killed him in the tree cave and his dark energy remained in that place. The dark side pressence there is why Yoda chose to hide there, it masked his light to sidious and vader so that they could not find him. Mace, though a great swordsman, wasn't known for his overwhelming power in the force, he could have never survived that fall. Anakin on the other hand, had the highest midichlorian count ever and his extreme hate for what just happened to keep him alive on mustafar

and yoda gives a sad sigh when Luke enters because, just like his father, Luke won't listen. Luke refuses to go in without his weapons even though Yoda stresses that he won't need them. Yoda see's Luke not having control of his emotions just like Anakin and this troubles him.
