What's In a Name? -- A Galaxy Full of Names and Their Meanings
Throughout the 28 years of Star Wars, George Lucas (as well as dozens of Star Wars authors, game makers, etc.) has created thousands upon thousands of characters with a variety of unique, intriguing, and sometimes bizarre names (anyone remember Tallisibeth Enwandung Esterhazy from Dark Rendezvous?).

While this doesn't apply to all names in Star Wars, many of them (the most obvious being Sith names) have deeper meanings, usually twists on words that describe that character's personality.

Here is a list of all different Star Wars Characters (Movies as well as EU) that I know of that have meanings to their names (definitions from Dictionary.com). I am not definitely sure if all of these names are based on these words, just logical guesses. If anyone has more that they can think of I will update the list as the information comes in:

The Sith

- Darth Sidious coming from Insidious meaning Working or spreading harmfully in a subtle or stealthy manner. And for his other name Palpatine it could be an ironic twist from the word Palpable meaning Easily perceived; obvious. Definitely ironic since his intentions were definitely not easily percieved by the Jedi.
- Darth Maul coming from Maul meaning To injure by or as if by beating
- Darth Tyrannus coming from Tyrant or Tyrannical meaning despotic and oppressive
- Darth Vader coming (possibly) from Invade meaning To enter by force in order to conquer or pillage
- Darth Bane coming from Bane meaning cause of harm, ruin, or death
- Darth Malak coming (possibly) from Malice meaning A desire to harm others or to see others suffer; extreme ill will or spite
- Darth Nihilus coming (possibly) from Annihilate meaning To destroy completely
- Darth Plageuis coming from Plague meaning A highly infectious, usually fatal, epidemic disease; a pestilence
- Darth Revan coming (possibly) from Reaving meaning To rob, plunder, or pillage
- Darth Traya coming from betrayal.

Other Characters

- Greedo coming from Greed which means An excessive desire to acquire or possess more than what one needs or deserves
- Zam Wesell (possibly) from Weasel which means A person regarded as sneaky or treacherous
- Qui-Gon Jinn (possibly from) Jinni meaning in Muslim legends a spirit often capable of assuming human or animal form and exercising supernatural influence over people. I got this idea based on what happens in ROTS.
- Captain Panaka (hope you're reading this Dan Wallace!) possibly from Panic meaning relating to, or resulting from sudden, overwhelming terror
- Finis Valorum (thanks to ForgottenMaster) possibly from Finish/Last and Value/Worth, or the Last of Worthiness. Perhaps coming from the fact that he was the Last Worthy Chancellor before the corrupt Palpatine. Valorum could also come from Valorous or meaning having or showing valor
- General Grievous coming from Grievous meaning Causing grief, pain, or anguish
- Padme Amidala coming from possibly amicable meaning kind and generous.
That's all I have so far. I'll add more as I can think of them.
