Could The Old Republic & Kotor 3 Exist Together?
Greetings, bloggers, friends, and fellow fans!

I hope you all had a good, restful Thanksgiving if you live in America and just a good week if not. Today I'm going to be discussing something that has been dragging on, quite frankly, my heart since October 21: Could The Old Republic and Kotor 3 exist together?

This questions seems honest enough, right? Well, it's actually quite complicated. First, let's set this down: The Old Republic is not not Knights of the Old Republic III. It has a different name, contract, as well as setting, taking place 300 hundred years after the events of Kotor. However, the story does follow that of which was setup in the first Knights of the Old Republic games. In fact, according to Bioware, this could be considered "Kotor 3-12." But in what way? I just said it's not Kotor 3, but Bioware says that it is not only 3 but 3 through 12!

I'd like to assume content, not story, and here's why: I want a single player Kotor 3 to finish the specific, note specific, story of Revan and the Exile. I want to go into the Unknown Region and learn what happens to them first hand, whether that means being a Padawan sent to investigate or being one of them, I don't care. I want The Old Republic to hint at what happen but leave open the door to explore it by myself in a single player Kotor 3; I want to feel what Revan felt, hear what the Exile heard, see what Bastila saw, etc. I'm a complete or nothing person-- if it's hinted at that's nice, but I always love the feeling I get when I connect something in different games, stories, comics; to me, it's good writing. I don't want some dragged out, useless story arc when I could be seeing the most creative writing in the world and happily paying to play it.

Now, I'm not saying The Old Republic doesn't mean anything to me; it certainly does. Quite a lot, actually. I now can have a feel for what the galaxy was like closer to pre-Bane and I love it. It also will give me a fine sense of community again; I played SWG and loved it and I plan on playing it again when I get the chance. Personally, I find the idea of a Kotor era MMO brilliant and if they leave some parts vague it can absolutely work with a single player RPG Knights of the Old Republic III. I have faith that the writers involved with TOR, which include many that worked on Kotor and hopefully may include Drew K after he finished Bane 3 and ME 2, will write awesome stories that actually are worthy of the Kotor saga. I also think they will write to be vague for us gamers to enjoy one more Kotor thing.

So, could TOR and Kotor 3 exist together? Sure, why the heck not! Well, I think so. What do you guys think though? Leave that in the comments-- I'm very interested in this subject for some reason.

That about wraps up my thoughts on this topic; next time I should be going into why SW celebs are the best, which should be quite fun. Until next time, may the force be with you and the gaming controller as well!

Signing off,

I agree on every point!

KOTOR 3 and TOR can certainly coexist if they try.

And I'd be very happy if they made both.

If I remember correctly, In one of the video's the developers decided not to make Kotor 3 but to make TOR instead. I dont know if this means there never will be another kotor but you can always hope. I am apprehensive about TOR because I tried Galaxies, but it sucked really bad. I'll give Bioware a chance but it wont be easy for them to turn peoples opinion around.

Me too! I'd happily pay for both, that's for sure. I think you hit it on the head though-- if they try. They need to think about and I'm fairly certain they have..

It's Bioware-- they didn't want to make Kotor II and have pretty much always stated they don't want Kotor 3. Obsidian, on the other hand, is a totally different story....

I'll give Bioware a chance but it wont be easy for them to turn peoples opinion around.

Which, I feel, stinks! They have done well so far with their promises about TOR (update the site each week); I trust Bioware.

Could it? Absolutely. Will it...well, it's hard to say. First, lets see how Obsidian does on Alpha Protocol (we both agree they're most likely to be the dev. to get the game right now). At this point, I think a KotOR 3 would have to come out after TOR. If TOR is successful they'll think the KotOR franchise is worth the money and develop it. As successful as TFU was, I think they'll wanna test the waters on the KotOR time period with TOR before KotOR 3. And that can only happen if they plan for it to happen. I'm not convinced they care enough about a future KotOR 3 to write it that way. I'm not saying they dont care, I'm saying I think it's debatable.

I do not like MMOs so I am completely indifferent to the success of TOR. I would love to see Bioware do a KotOR 3, but, don't forget that they are also going to be working on Mass Effect 2, which I am looking forward to. If Obsidian pickes up the rights to a third KotOR, I think they will learn from there mistakes and produce a solid third game. At this point all I want is a KotOR 3. Please? Anyone?

I would also like to see a "true" KOTOR 3. However, I don't know that we will ever see it. I do still hope. I would like to see Bioware do it, but I would not have a problem with Obsidian picking it up. I think there are enough of us that want a KOTOR 3 that it would be worth the effort. Let's just hope a developer sees it that way.

There only "mistake" was time, from what I've seen; they had a whole bunch of content for Kotor II ready to go but time just got in the way-- I'm not going to play the blame game, but I will say that Lucasarts made a near to impossible deadline. Doesn't mean Obsidian didn't do all it could, though. I don't know the whole story behind the whole timing situation, but it seems to me if Obsidian could do what they did in the amount of time they did they can certainly make one heck of a game given the time Bioware had.

I obviously can't speak for Obsidian, but when I talked to Chris Avellone earlier this year he was very excited at the chance to do a Kotor 3. I don't see why that excitement isn't a good idea to feed.
