Eventually, all things come to an end. No strike that - that's not really true. I think I'm more of the opinion that as one chapter ends, another one begins. Yeah, it's more accurate to say that we are always in transition.
Before anyone asks, no, I haven't been drinking spoiled blue milk and have now become delusional. Nothing like that. I'm just waxing philosophic here because on Aug 15 my Hyperspace membership expires, and a while back I made the decision that I wouldn't be renewing. One year was enough for me, and actually a fun year it was. Truth be told, I'm a little surprised at myself that I was able to maintain a Star Wars blog for the entire year of my membership here.
When I first joined Hyperspace I understood that I would be able to maintain a blog for only so long, and that inevitably the time would come when I would move on to something else in my Star Wars fandom. I figured that I would have this membership for just the one year, and it turns out that one year of blogging worked out pretty good. It feels like the time is right for this blog to go out of business, so to speak.
There are some very cool developments going on in my personal life as well, which really fit with the idea that we are always in transition. That's what makes life so interesting.
That thought of transition applies to my Star Wars fandom in general, and my Star Wars writing more specifically. I've always had an interest in putting together some SW fanfiction stories, and while my literary abilities can't be considered to be all that great, I do enjoy creating characters and scenes and such. Point of fact, I've had some entries here on the SW blogs that, looking back, really bordered on that fuzzy line between parody and fanfiction. I don't think that I crossed the line into fanfiction, but it's possible that I tip-toed pretty close to that line.
It's also possible that the moderators may have just let those entries slide, sort of a "D525, move along and try not to hurt yourself" strategy of moderation. Actually, I'm really not sure that I even registered on the moderators' radar screens. Which is probably a good thing.
I'm also really looking forward to the Star Wars tv series that is apparently in the works. That sounds like it will be interesting stuff.
My future writing plans are to post some stories over at
the PLB fanfiction club. So far, I've posted two
very short stories (
The Hit and
Dark Jedi), and please consider yourself invited to stop by and check out how things are going over there. You can see my feeble attempts at literary creation and chastise them as you see fit (critical feedback is actually very much appreciated). As I said, my first two attempts were very short - nothing too serious, but as with any hobby, I'm in it to challenge myself to get better and to have fun doing it. I've never claimed to be a "good" writer (nor do I now), but I do know that I enjoy writing. And that's what matters.
Over the course of this year on Hyperspace, I've also gained an interest in the Star Wars novels of the Expanded Universe. In the past I never really paid much attention to the EU, but now I've read a number of SW books and enjoyed them all very much. I think my favorite is probably the novelization of
The Revenge of The Sith by Matt Stover, with a close second going to
Dark Lord, the Rise of Darth Vader by James Luceno. I also enjoyed reading
Hard Contact and
Triple Zero by Karen Traviss which both brought me alot of understanding about the Clone Troopers and the Mandalorian heritage. The other SW books I read (and I would highly recommend them all) were
Labyrinth of Evil by James Luceno,
Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter by Michael Reaves, and
Jedi Trial by David Sherman and Dan Cragg.
Yep, it is fun to reminisce about the past year of SW books and blogs and the goings on around here, but as one chapter ends another one begins and I'm looking forward to taking my ramblings onto the fanfiction scene. I'm not sure where this will lead, but I'm certain it will be a fun ride.
