 | Duel Come Here Often? |
For those that are remotely interested, there have been various obstacles in my way over the past 6 weeks or so that have prevented me from nearing a computer, let alone going online and coming here. I'm not saying that things will improve, but I do now have the opportunity to magically make words appear on your screen before I have to vanish again.
So I thought I'd apparate ( you like that? I've been reading Harry Potter - thats all I can do lately) a controversial look at a subject that's been bugging me ever since May 2005.
What is it?
Why has it been bugging me?
Well, thanks for asking - the subject matter this time is lightsaber duels.
Why does it bug me?
Two reasons:
Firstly: There have been a number of blogs over the last two years that rate the various duels, which is fine. The majority of them, if not all (of the ones I've read) place Obi-Wan Vs Vader in ROTS as their all-time favourite duel. That is also fine, people are entitled to their own opinions, it may be a free country wherever it is you are situated (although it certainly isn't a free blogdom!), but I strongly disagree and therefore have been meaning to do it my way, from my own point of view.
Secondly, and most importantly: The duel on Mustafar was very disappointing for me. I understand that a lot of fans rave about it but I just don't get it, in fact - I rather despise the duel.
Allow me to explain.
Before I do, let me set some parameters that have influenced my decisions. This is by no means a correct way to look at it, but it is my way of looking at it.
1. The duel does not need to contain oodles of choreography to be good. Nor does it need to be fast and furiously paced. Intensity (for me) comes from the drama, not the action.
2. John Williams' score. 'Nuff said.
3. Expectations. I've been waiting for the Mustafar duel for over twenty years. Like many fans, we were waiting for this duel more than anything else in ROTS. (Yes, this is a huge reason why I'm disappointed in it, but - I had high expectations for other duels as well)
Another point to note:
Younger fans who have not been waiting for eons like me for the Mustafar duel would not have the same expectations, and therefore, would not share the same disappointment. As I said, you are all entitled to your own opinions.
So without further ado, herewith the countdown to my bestest duel, and why:
11. Obi-Wan vs Darth Vader, Revenge of the Sith. As I already stated, I was hugely disappointed with this, one reason is explained above. Yes, it's got a little drama in it; Master versus Apprentice, brother versus brother and all that and happens right after we sadly see Vader break Padmés heart (itself a great moment - for the wrong reasons). If you've watched the documentary on the special features section " Within a Minute" you can see how much goes on in that scene. But I think they spent more time on making the lava and the facility look cool that they slipped up with the fight. I don't care much for the various forms of combat and I don't know enough to say " oh my god - Obi's using Form X" - but I simply thought the duelling was over the top. That second where they are both windmilling in front of each other without touching is hugely hilarious. If that were me, I'd have lifted my knee up into Vader's groin area. Fight over. Another thing wrong and again, boils down to expectation - was that the sabers are blue on blue. I wanted to see Vader construct a red saber, but I do realise that a red saber might have been hard to spot amongst all the lava.
Another thing I didn't like was the final stroke of Obi-Wan - severing poor Vader's limbs. From reading the novelisation of ROTJ back in the early 80s, I'd heard about Vader falling into a lava pit after a mighty duel, but to be so easily despatched here was a big disappointment. I'd have expected for Obi-Wan to use the trick Darth Maul played on him to Force-Push Vader into the lava - that to me would have been cooler.
To sum this duel up: Immensely flawed. It does however, elevate Obi-Wan and Vader's duel in ANH.
10. Obi-Wan vs Grievous, Revenge of theSith. What's with this en gardé stance with his arm outsretched and fingers pointed? Looks ridiculous, if you ask me. The whole fight improved once it went away from being a lightsaber duel.
9. Obi-Wan/Anakin vs Dooku, Attack of the Clones. This had huge potential as we know how the previous two-on-one duel went. But alas, I just didn't get the "Dooku's so powerful that he easily whupped them" message - it looked clumsy to me, and when my hopes soared as Anakin used two sabers, they went and got rid of one almost instantly. Then the rest of the duel was close ups making them look like they were dancing the Maccarena in a night club.
8. Obi-Wan/Anakin vs Dooku, Revenge of the Sith. I wasn't happy with the motion of Obi-Wan getting Force flipped by Dooku - it didn't look real enough, and the sight of Palpatine going " yes!" looked out of character. And the way Dooku was executed was silly - he could have gotten out of the way while Anakin was having a cosy chat with the Chancellor. And don't give me that "he was distracted by losing his hands and the realisation of Sith treachery" - he's supposed to be uber tough.
7. Yoda vs Count Dooku, Attack of the Clones. I was probably the only one who didn't cheer when Yoda started going Bruce Lee. I thought it was fun but I never got the message that we see " why Yoda is THE master", which is something Rick McCallum stated during production. It was okay though.
6. Yoda vs The Emperor, Revenge of the Sith. Effects laden, but still entertaining. Thankfully this one is interwoven with Obi-Wan vs Vader so I don't have to endure that one in one go. This one does show us why Yoda is THE master (but not good enough), and I defy anyone to not get a lump in your throat moments after when Yoda says "failed I have". Gets a boost because of its symbolic "death of democracy" as Sidious goes all Tazmanian Devil in the Senate chamber.
5. Mace Windu vs Darth Sidious, Revenge of the Sith. This isn't terribly good dueling - neither Jackson nor McDiarmid can wield a lightsaber very well. But, it's the fight scene where Anakin chooses sides, and how. From the line " it's treason then" to the point where yet another limb is lost - there's room for improvement. I particularly like the endless debates on whether Palpatine was faking being weak to goad Anakin to intervening or whether Mace actually did get the better of him - but that's for another time. But the duel gets a huge boost with one swish of little Ani's sword and Mace going base jumping. " What have I done?" Ouch.
4. Obi-Wan vs Darth Vader, A New Hope. Boring, action wise, but immense, dialogue wise. It's made even more profound knowing what we now know from the prequels. Was gutted when Obi-Wan did what he did. ~ sniff~
3. Luke vs Darth Vader, Return of the Jedi. Actually, if you study this duel, there's not a whole lot of saber duelling - it's not overdone anyway ~ coughmustafarcough~. There's more dialogue and Emperor/Vader taunting. This time, they're more evenly matched and Luke is even reluctant to fight, not like on Cloud City. Here is where we see Luke is truly a Jedi, not in Jabba's Palace or at any other time in the film and its this realisation that makes the bit where they recommence dueling all the more intense. Luke is full of fury and you almost will the screen to show Luke not falling to the Dark Side. And it just goes uphill all the time, from Luke discarding his saber (yay) to him getting the shock of his life via The Emperor (boo) to the persona-switch of Vader to Anakin (yay) that we haven't seen again until Reservoir Dogs (Mr Orange to Freddy Newandyke!).
In short, it's a rollercoaster, and worthy of third place.
2. Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan vs Darth Maul, The Phantom Menace. I read somewhere during the build-up to the film's release in '99 that we were finally going to see how the Jedi work. We'd heard for so long how the guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy were supposed to be. We only had the EU to give us this insight. Then Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan and Darth Maul exploded onto our screens and it was "wow". This was great choreography by Nick Gillard, I'm surprised he never replicated this feat with the other prequels.
As soon as Maul switches on both blades, you know you're in for a treat, despite the fact that the whole lot of them could have won there and then if Qui-Gon would have said " everyone open fire now!" instead of insisting that they could handle it. But where's the fun in that?
So we get Duel of the Fates going on - a fine piece of music by John Williams, probably the finest of the prequels, and it mirrors the breathtaking pace of the duel that again was not repeated on Mustafar with Battle of the Heroes. It's frenetic, it's octane and has much use of the Force from death defying falls and leaps to a super-cool way of getting in when you've lost your key, better than plunging your saber through the lock in my book.
Then we have a death which most people probably saw coming but not me, I almost yelled "nooo" more than Obi-Wan did. I can go on and on, but you all know how it ends. It's a duel of two halves. And is awesome - not a word I usually use.
1. Luke versus Vader, The Empire Strikes Back. Exploded all expectations. We all knew in the late 70s that Luke would soon be up against the man that killed his father. But wow, even before the revelation, it was a badass fight, especially as all we'd seen so far was the one on the Death Star. We all knew that Luke was no match, but we saw him hold his own for a bit, and improvising with the best use of a severed hosepipe I've ever seen. We saw flips and more use of the Force for the first time and it was good to watch as we slowly saw the evil guy getting the better of the inexperienced boy.
And it moved through different levels too (akin to the Naboo fighting), not just shuffling down a corridor or throne room, it moved to different locations, through windows, on balconys, on gantrys. All the while Williams' score keeping the hair on the back of my neck on end (sorry Battle of the Heroes, you just don't live up to this).
And just when you think it can't get any better, we find out that he's not battling the guy who killed his father. Jaw-dropping time.
And then just when you think " there's simply no way Luke's going to get out of this" - he's beaten, Vader's going to win - oh mum why did you bring me here I can't watch - Luke takes a header into the abyss. And lives. And is saved. And still gets taunted from afar. All the good guys are on the back foot. It's a topsy-turvey, no holds barred duel, containing thrills and spills like no other, containing a revelation that no one expected and will never be beaten by any movie ever again.
And that's good enought for me.
Did I miss any out? Meh, maybe Qui-Gon vs Maul on Tatooine, but it aint even close and is better in the novelisation.
Okay, so I'm open for attack now. Fire away if you so desire - I'll try and respond tomorrow but probably won't be able to until next week.

I liked the first duel between Luke and Vader myself. Of all of the lightsaber duels, I think THAT ONE stands out more. The fact that Vader reveals in this battle that he is Luke's father, IMO, is jaw-dropping. Those of us who saw ESB for the first time ever (no prequel trilogy to fall back on) were shocked by Vader's revelation. OUCH!!
I also liked th Qui-gon/Obi-wan vs. Darth Maul next. Maul's duel-bladed lightsaber was awesome!! It was very sad when he killed Qui-gon. And then you saw the emotions on Obi-wan's face. Another OUCH!

I have to agree with you on the third choice. The duel between father and son- everybody knew that was coming. I even agree for why you like this one. I liked how Vader was taunting Luke, whereas Luke was trying to get through to who his father really was and draw him out of Vader. Attempting to bring his father back to the good side.

I agree the duel in ESB is probably the best. Despite the progress of film making it still holds its own even now. I really like the Obi-Wan / Anakin duel in ROTS. The ending to it fits with Obi-wan's fighting nature, he was great at improvising. It totally reminds me of the Bruce Wayne/Raz-ah-goul (spelling!?) duel in Batman Begins - mind your surroundings! But yes the wind mill scene is a little cheesy - something out of Conan.
Great list!

There I was, ready to jump in the shower to start my busy day. I just need to check something on the internet first, I mumbled to myself (I talk to myself when no one is around. Heck, I talk to myself when there are others around! ). That was taken care of quickly, and I decided to peruse the list of latest blogs. I'll come back to them later, I promised. . . . Ooh, there's a blog by R! Haven't heard from him in a while.
I saw the subject matter, and opted to read just this one. Oh my gosh, look at the length of it! I'll need sustenance. So, off to the kitchen for a cup of coffee and handful of raisins. I finally sat down to read. Shower could wait.

Wow -- a list with real thought behind it!
I don't agree with all your choices (for me, Yoda vs. Dooku would be much higher, if only by virtue of their "wizards duel" at the top), but I'm really glad you placed TPM as high as you did. Those were some stunning visuals.

Great read, R, and worth putting off the start to my busy day! Can't say I agree with you on every matter, but, hey, you look at the duels from your point of view, and I look at them from mine.
Has anyone besides me seen the strong (visual) similarities between the lightsaber duel between Anakin/Obi-wan and Dooku on Geonosis and Luke's lightsaber duel with DV in ESB?
Just a note about the ROTS duel, I loved it. I think it was intense, and the heart-wrenching part was knowing O-W didn't want to do what he was tasked with doing.

My favorite has to be Luke vs. Anakin/Darth Vader, ROTJ, and one of the reasons why is what you pointed out. The duel dies down. Luke hides. And then comes blazing back when his sister's soul is threatened. Her soul. Not his. Not his life. Not his fate. Hers. The music is perfect...evocative and chilling...and the determination in Luke's eyes is clear. With every whizzing light saber strike, we already know that good will win against evil. I love it. I don't see that as a question of whether or not Luke will fall to the Dark Side. Remember, back in 1983, "falling to the Dark Side" didn't have exactly the same meaning as it does now, post ROTS...(con't)

We hadn't yet seen the process of that fall, so we couldn't know what Luke would face. But we know that Luke did. Amazing. Just amazing.
I have to concur with your #2 pick. For the shear fact of Darth Maul's two-sided red light saber and the utter evil with which he wields it, this duel is intense. I didn't necessarily expect Qui-Gon to kick it right there, either, but in retrospect, the outcome couldn't have been any different. Obi-Wan's "Nooooooooooo" is heart-breaking and a great piece of foreshadowing when you look at the saga as one film.
Obi-Wan vs. Anakin on Mustafar rocks, Rogueish. I don't care what you say! (con't)

Again, the music behind the whizzing blades makes me tear up. Every time. It's not just blows to the body that the two "brothers" are thrusting upon each other. It's blows to the heart, blows to the soul, and we can feel them ...every one. Sure it's almost campy in its excess, but who cares??! This is the sixth film in a gargantuan epic saga. We waited for it for years and years (and years). I say, bluster away, men! Time for the Force to explode.
And that's it...I think.

Ok, to business...
I agree with your #1 choice whole-heartedly! Fantastic duel from the get-go and The Revelation is unmatched in movie history as you said.
I can actually agree with many of your choices, however I really like the Dooku/Yoda duel in ATOC as I LOVED seeing our little green friend "going Yoda" on Dooku's butt! That was just fun and so unexpected!
I also really love the Mustafar duel (please forgive me...) just because it was so intense and you could see the passion in both men's faces and actions throughout the entire duel.
Ahhh, Maul's double-saber... 'nuff said!

I'm still not sure about the best (I tend to side with Obi-Wan/ Qui-Gon v. Maul but for pure drama, it's Windu v. Palps), but we're on the same page with the worst. The trend seems to be the goofy sword-play in those fights and I've always had those sentiments, too. And another thing: this is a LASER sword, right? Why do you need to chop someone's head off? Just tap him! It's a laser!

My number 1 is Obi-Wan vs Darth Maul, post-Qui-Gon elimination. I think the reason why some folks are so hard on the Mustafar duel is all the quick camera cuts in the first part. The action happens so fast your eyes barely settle before the next cut takes place. This wasn't the case in the TPM duel: longer shots taken from camera angles further away, so you could see McGregor's & Ray Park's entire bodies in frame, and the full choreography that Park & Gillard designed. Looks more elegant to me.
I also like the Yoda-Palpy duel in the Senate. The shot of them carrying on in the Senate hall, pulling back further and further, was the best clip in all of ROTS for me. Visual high drama.

Great thoughts on every duel! Funny you mention Vader/Luke from ESB, because I just watched ESB again last night. And when it ended, I thought to myself that I had seriously under-rated that duel in the past. I hadn't really watched it with the same fascination as last night for some reason. It had drama, good action, good dialogue, good visuals ... and really shot its way up to the top of my list as well.
I love the battle on Mustafar for what it represented ... the tying together of the two trilogies. But the battle in ESB certainly moves the entire saga in a new direction.
Great entry!

I pretty much agree with all of your choices here, although I'm not quite as disappointed with the Mustafar duel (bar the much maligned twirly baton scene). I would also move Yoda/Sidious a little further up. Actually, thinking about the Musty duel, I too didn't like the blue on blue action, until I remembered that Obi gives Luke Anakin's saber later.

I would definitely rank the Mustafar battle a bit higher, but the ESB Luke/Vader fight is my number one as well. I'd put the ROTJ Luke/Vader one right underneath it. In the past, that one has been my favorite, for all the reasons you've stated above, but as in all things Star Wars, my "favorites" are constantly changing. I think the battles that are most intense for me are the ones in which I feel the greatest connection to the characters. So, even if I favor the choreography or context of one, I'll feel more emotionally hooked by another. (Perhaps I feel so connected to the Mustafar duel because I am reminded of the father/son conflict that nearly brings me to tears every time I watch the duels in ESB and ROTJ.)

You know, I started reading this assuming that I was going to disagree, but as I got into it.. ...I found I actually agreed a lot! While my duel rating probly differs some, I agree that the Mustafar duel was lacking some. I never got that whole no-touchy windmill thing (I like what you would have done to end it !). While I liked the fast-paced style, it could have been better (yes, TPM was better). It could have had a cooler terrain like in TPM - going all over that beautiful palace. Mustafar was cool, but...I don't know. TPM just looked cooler (maybe cause I'm a girl and more partial to palaces then lava planets? )

ami sneaks up to Rogueish and plants one on him...catching him completely off guard..."
Wow, that's what I get for being away? I'll have to go away more often!
Sure it's almost campy in its excess, but who cares??! Apparently me. Thanks for your comments Ami, I value your opinions so much.
I also really love the Mustafar duel (please forgive me...) just because it was so intense and you could see the passion in both men's faces and actions throughout the entire duel. Well, in Ewan McGregor I agree, but Hayden just scowled, anyone can look angry.
I miss you!!!! I told you before - no sap!

Why do you need to chop someone's head off? Just tap him! It's a laser! Excellent point, Irish! One of my favourite Jedi moves in one of the Kyle Katarn games (can't remember which) is where you do a forward roll and come up into a stabbing-crouch. Its my absolute most favourite way to dispose of stormies.
I thought you loved every minute of ROTS. Maybe it hasn't held up for you in repeated viewings? Exactly right, Torture-Droid. Every time I watch it, I hate it even more.
At least you have a soft spot for the Clone Wars toons. Don't you? Actually, yes I do. Now that we've gone away from those dreadful 3 minute episodes and I can watch them all in one go, I absolutely love 'em.

Great entry! Thanks, Darth H. I appreciate your comments.
I too didn't like the blue on blue action, until I remembered that Obi gives Luke Anakin's saber later. Well, I'm sure an earlier scene could have been written in where Anakin actually says "Can you give this to my son when he's older, I'd like him to have it", maybe after it got faulty (which Obi later fixed) and he had to construct a new one (then later constructing a badass red one). Yes, this would mean that he would have had to come clean about Padmé, but no biggie, that Correlian Jedi Master in Jedi Trial came clean to Anakin about his marriage. Oh there's so many permutations...

Did I mention how happy it makes me to see you here again? Is that sap? Thanks for your comments - This will be something I'll surely continue to meditate on. Please do.
ALRIGHTY then . . . enough touching sentiments, rivet head might get me banned for being offensively sappy again . . . I'm with the Torture-Droid on this.
and now when I watch ROTS, this is one of the times that I stop paying attention. It's tooo long and it just doesn't do it for me anymore; Alright, total agreement, no sibling rivalry.
Hey there! Hey yourself.
Can't believe you got that pased the auto-censor! Split it into two words, and it wont make it.

Thanks for reminding me what made the OT duels so great! I want to go back and watch/ponder them now! My pleasure, and thanks for your comments.
Just wanted to say HI !!!!!! Hi back. You take care. You too, I approve of your choices.
Do we really need to talk about the second one - its like trying to watch the holiday special! We certainly don't. Nor do we need to talk about the Holiday Special.

You'll have to elaborate Wolfie.
I shall. I'm going to go watch the two so I can write down each instance. Remember, I said visually.
Be back soon! (and, if all the spots are gone, I shall email you! My quest is to enlighten! )

I think the ROTS duels are overrated because it is the most recent one, and people have forgotton how good the other movies were. My favorite duel is the Kenobi/Qui-Gon vs Maul duel, because of the intense action and the classic good vs evil fight to the death, which is not exactly the case in the Obi/Anakin fight, due to Anakin's double personality. I think Anakin and Obi-Wan's emotional battle should have been emphasized more than the fight.

I agree that the ESB dual is defo No1 - it just has the right mix of force, effects, acrobatics and drama.
I also agree that ROTS Mustafar dual is over rated, the rapidness of the dual lacks drama and catapults you quickly to the end of the film. As you say regarding ROTJ its slower and more drama infused - you don't need tonnes of acrobatics and quick flashes to make a good fight!
However, the yoda v dooku fight in AOTC was a nice surprise that redeemed the film (as you can tell AOTC is not my favourite of the saga - however, it has improved with repeat viewings).
Interesting blog.....

My 2 cents
Each duel has good and bad points. Each is important in its own way.
I don't have a favorite. I also waited a VERY long time to see the duel between Vader and Obi-wan in Sith. While some of it was over the top, I was in no way disappointed. Is it the best or worst? I don't care!!. I am lucky enough to live in a world with Star wars.
Sit Back and enjoy

How about Han v Dead Tauntaun? I know the poor critter was defenseless, but it was pretty gorram sweet to see Han wielding a saber

"Sigh"
I thought the Mustafar duel was fantastic, I loved the fast pace and the action. But I cannot choose a favorite duel, although the Bespin and Final duel between Luke and Vader are often the first ones I think of.
Anyway, you're entitled to your opinion. But I still say it was awesome.

Excellent point, Irish! I've got a lot to add, but in the interest of saving space and at the risk of spamming or flaming or doing something else slightly illegal (I say "slightly" because I don't know how well-defined the terms are in the blogosphere):
For more on fighting and the problems with it, go here (shameless self-promotion). This was a good one, too.
Rogueish and I are on the same page. I'll go a step further and submit that the less flashy sword techniques in the OT era are actually more highly refined in that they conserve energy and eliminate wasteful movements.
Having said that, I love the lava.

~tee hee~...Ok I'll quit throwing poodoo....Actually, I agree with your thoughts on all of the above. The Mustafar duel was too freaking long. And it did bore the crap out of me.
But the Luke vs. Vader duel was and still is everything I was hoping for in a duel.
Great blog and don't be a stranger.
