I was watching Return of the Jedi with my padawan last night. For most of the movie she sat perfectly still and said very little. She would occasionally ask in a scene change where did Dart Bader or Woda go. She got a kick out of R2 zapping Salacious Crumb (sorry stooge). She loved Yoda as any child does. When he was in bed ignoring Lukes question about Vader being his father, she said "Woda tired. He has blanket. He go sleep." When he died and dissappeared she looked confused. She knows the meanings of facial expressions and Luke looked sad of course. So I had to explain to her that he went bye bye like Grandpa Don. She understood and got a bit quiet after that. Whenever they showed an AT-ST she would exclaim "Look at that daddy!" I would occasionally tell her who this or that character was. I pointed out Han and said he's handsome? She repied "Uh huh, He's got brown hair." Maybe she's going to have a thing for brunettes like her old man. I had explained who Leia was a week and a half ago (or at least recognition took a week and a half ago) She was going potty in the bathroom off my Star Wars room and looking at a poster said "that Pincess Leeia". It took me a moment to see what she was looking at. It surprised me, it being said out of the blue like it was. When Vader kills the Emporer throwing him down the shaft into a fiery blue oblivion. She asked "where he go". So I told her Darth Vader threw him in the hole. She replied "Oh! He throw him down hole?" "Yes" I said. "Oh, Okay." As parents of little ones know these interchanges can go on a while so I will end it there. After the unmasking of Vader scene she looks at me and says "I like Dart Bader". She really does too. All through the movie she would point him out. "Daddy there's Dart Bader." He's also the one she talks about the most on a regular basis. Well he and R2D2. In fact as I was putting the DVD in she said excitedly "I want to see Dart Bader! Yay Yay Dart Bader!" At the celebration at the end she exclaimed "Yay!" and clapped. Saying they're dancing. "Oo pireworks. They got purple and blue and pink. It's pretty pireworks. Oo look deres Woda!" her conversion to Star Wars geek is almost complete. Bwah ha ha hah!
I hadn't thought about blogging about this but when telling my wife this morning she rolled her eyes and asked "So are you going to write about this in your
blog?" So to spite her I am.
One thing I noticed while watching the duel. Luke intentionally thinks about Leia. Very hard actually for no reason I can think of. Vader thinks he is gaining some secret knowledge to use against him but I think he was being played by o' Luke. He was exposing Leia's identity to him as a gamble that it would tip the scales in his favor. Bringing out even more fatherly pangs within him. Just a thought.
