The symbols in Star Wars abound. It would take years to note each symbol and their multiple meanings. That's what these blog pages are for in part. Having the fans give their take on the movies. In doing so we all get a better understanding of the saga through our differing perspectives. With this in mind I wanted to once again take a part of story and give my take.
The evening on Tatooine in A New Hope as the
twin suns set is a image
that has always held a soft spot for me. It is a powerful scene about the
Young Luke Skywalker longing for the future but thinking it will never be
attainable, but lets go deeper. This to me is about an ending. Nothing can
begin without something else ending. Up until then Luke had lived on the
farm living an average blue collar life. There was nothing special about him as far as others and even himself were concerned. That morning he got up, worked his chores, and helped buy some new droids. Nothing but the same old life, ending in the same old way. The day before had a bit of excitement with the space battle he witnessed through his binoculars and the news of Biggs entering the Rebellion, but none of this really affected him personally.
He is none aware that the ending of that day was the ending of the life he
knew. He would no longer be the farmboy. He would start his journey to
become the hero of the galaxy. In fact his fate was revealed to him as soon as the suns set and one of the new droids tells him the other droid
purchased had escaped. He must leave early the next day to find the droid where he runs into Ben and begins his adventure as we know the rest. That old life is stripped away from him. Freeing him to be everything he ever dreamed of being and more.
A second symbolic meaning for this is a that of the larger picture. Just as
the Suns setting at the end of Revenge of the Sith was the night falling on
the old republic and Jedi, transitioning to the new age of the Empire; so
was this the marking of the ending of the Empire and the rise of the New
Republic to come. A new brighter tomorrow was on the next horizon.
Being heralded by the third meaning of the suns. (Twin Suns) The hope of the future would be brought at the hands of the twins. Luke and Leia, after
losing everything they had, would soon be together to lead the Rebellion to victory. These twins born of fire in that their early birth was brought
about by the events on Mustafar as well as the Sith fire that genetically burned within them. Coming to bring down the Empire.
I wonder if the any of the people of Tatooine had any twin mythologies
associated with their suns. Several of our ancient cultures had myths such
as these showing the twin story to be a universal one. Stories that George
Lucas is well familiar with in his studies. So the chances of Lucas'
intentions being along those lines is likely. His knowledge and cinematic
vision is after all how he brought us his story. Every aspect of the film
being a deliberate and finely crafted use of symbolic story telling. It
resonates something within us. If we can take anything from the saga it is
this...Every bad day comes to an end, with the hope of something glorious
just a sunrise away.
