I was washing out a glass in the kitchen sink the other day, when I noticed
this.
Look familiar? It's a drain strainer that bears a striking resemblance to some of the distinct geometrical motifs prevalent in Star Wars architecture, particulary the
cockpit window of a TIE Fighter (and more recently, the
Jedi Starfighter).
I have always found these distinct symmetrical patterns to be strangely alluring, so much so, I even devoted a
blog to the subject sometime ago. Therefore, I am left to wonder, is this a mere coincidence, a product of apophenia? Or is this evidence of a more insidious agenda on George Lucas' part?
I think it is the latter.
The fact is, this sink strainer would have been one of the first and most frequent things I saw as an infant, when my late mother used to sit me atop the counter adjacent to the sink as she washed dishes (I now own the house myself).
It is interesting to note that this sink was manufactured about 30 years ago, around the same time the initial Star Wars movie was released.
Was George working in concert with sink manufacturers to imprint these geometrical patterns early in our psychological development, breeding an entire generation to grow up to be obsessed with SW? Most likely. And I think proof can be found in the kitchen sink "easter egg" found in
Revenge of the Sith, which is not really a visual punchline to the scene having "everything but the...", but is actually a subtle in-company nod to LucasFilm's highly successful "sink" ploy.
Fess up, George. I'm onto your game.
