I am as much of a continuity freak as the next fan which is why there are aspects of the prequel trilogy that drive me nuts. Of course Luke must be taken to Tatooine to live with the Lars, but semantically it does not make sense because they are not his family. They are his step family through his grandmother's re-marriage. His maternal family actually resides on Naboo. If Yoda truly wanted Luke to grow up with family, he would have been sent to live with his blood aunt Sola and his cousins Ryoo and Pooja. Sure, Tatooine is a better place to hide him from the Empire, so Lucas should have generated a better dialogue sequence.
Back in the day, there was a theory that Owen Lars was actually Ben Kenobi's relative.
My own revisionist theory which I have related in the past, is that either Owen or Beru would be Anakin's half-sibling, making one of them related to Shmi and therefore really Luke's biological family. In which case Yoda's contention would be accurate. As it stands he is just a crazy, old wizard.

I know what you mean. I was really annoyed that Padme came from Naboo and not Alderaan. What an impact it would have if Palpatine blew up the world he came from in Episode IV--it would have really shown how unretrievably evil he had become.

The reason that Luke was sent to the Lars home was because they were related to his father. Yoda and the others needed to split Luke and Leia up, so that if Palps found one of them, the other still had a chance.

I agree with rappingrancor, because if Luke was sent to Naboo I think Palpatine would of noticed (his home planet and all), or more importantly Vader. I think he would notice the family of his dead wife caring for a new baby and would probably ponder the origin of the newborn. Also it was pretty clear that Vader hated Tatooine, so what better place to hide his only son. MTFBWY

Also I agree that a small dialogue sequence would have been nice to explain the decision.

Naboo was a safehouse for Jedi during the early Empire days, and maybe early enough that Obi-Wan and Yoda knew that it was one. Then, they would have definitely chosen Tatooine, since the Jedi on Naboo would eventually bring the Empire calling.

Good thoughts. From the obvious answer to preserve continuity, as you mention, maybe it was thought that the Lars family would accept Luke whole-heartedly, after what happened to Shmi. They could try and help make right what was once wrong. Anakin's step-brother was Owen so they were related in a sense, making them a family. Yoda perhaps picked up on this, as he must have known Shmi married Clieg Lars.

I don't understand why someone was annoyed that Padme came from Naboo, instead of Alderaan. It had been established before the release of the Prequel Trilogy that Leia had been adopted. Why should this be an annoyance?

I read in one of the books (not sure if it was Dark Lord or early in the Last of the Jedi series) that Tatooine was chosen because Obi-Wan believed that there was still some Anakin in Vader, and the Vader would not go to Tatooine because of that 'spark' of Anakin. He believed that, as GoldSquadron555 said, Vader hated Tatooine because it was Anakin's home, and would likely bring forth the 'Anakin' presonality if he went there.

Perhaps they choose Tatooine because of earlier experiences.. When Obi and Qui-Gon were on Naboo.. Darth Maul found them in the Palace.. And easily at that.. Perhaps it is easy to sense Force Sensitives on Naboo??..Nothing like that ever occured on Tatooine.. Besides from Qui-Gon finding Anakin..

Darth Maul was waiting for Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon in the palace on Naboo. According to the book, he didn't make a move for the Jedi until they and the militia had infiltrated the hanger

If Luke went to Naboo, Palp would have found him. I can't recall which novel said that Palp knew about the secret marriage because he had connections all over Naboo.
As for Tatooine, the RotJ novel page 66 says that Owen was Obi-wan's brother.
Then again, Watto could have been a backup for Owen and Beru. I think Watto was really Anakin's father. Human genes combined with Toydarian genes makes for strong jedis. =)

I believe it was in the first book of the Last of the Jedi series where it was stated that Vader would never return to Tatoonine for fear of re-awakening Anakin. The Lars's were never really relatives of Luke's. They were only a step family but it was definately the safest place to hide Luke. That way Obi-Wan could hide out there, too, to watch over and protect Luke.
It was in the book Return of the Jedi where Obi-Wan told Luke that Owen Lars was his brother. It was also in that same book on Endor where they said that Luke and Leia both had blue eyes. So goes the inconsistancies between movies and books.
