 | What's With Sunsets? |
Take a look.
And here.
'Kay, now here. (EDIT: Alright let's see if this link actually works this time . . . . )
This too.
Last one.
(And obviously look at the picture to the right! )
(I've spent hours looking for the perfect pictures, but these are as close as I could come. But I know you all probably have the right pictures floating around in your brains, so you'll know what I'm referring to. )
What's with sunsets?? George uses them all the time, and they always seem to be powerful images, especially the binary sunset in ANH. What is it about sunsets that is so powerful? Unfortunately, Wikipedia failed me this time, so I'm making this up as I go along.
First of all, the obvious answer is that they're beautiful - almost magical. One can sit transfixed by them for as long as they last. The sky burns with beautiful hues of red, orange, yellow, pink, blue, and purple. It's just amazing. We can see that despite all the terrible things that go on in the world, "there is light and beauty up there, that no shadow can touch." (Thanks, Sam Gamgee!!) This holds true in Star Wars as well.
A sunset has also been known to symbolize death or the end of something (good or bad), for after sunset comes night.
For Luke, it signaled the end of life as he knew it - he was about to leave everything he knew and go on the journey of a lifetime.
The sunset when Anakin went in search of Shmi foretold the death of his innocence - he would soon kill for revenge.
The sunset on Coruscant at the end of AOTC indicates the beginning of the end of the Republic, as well as the end of peace.
The Coruscant sunset in ROTS marked the end of Anakin's life as a Jedi, and the beginning of the end of the Jedi Order as well. As Matthew Stover wrote in the ROTS novel, "This is the twilight of the Jedi. The end starts now."
For Obi-Wan in ROTS, it was the end of his normal life as a Jedi.
For the Lars', their lives would change drastically too, with a new baby to raise. Additionally, that same sunset indicated the end of the Republic and the prequels.
For us today, sunset means the end of another day, and might cause us to reflect on either what we failed to accomplish or perhaps the good parts of the day. There is a wistfulness about sunsets. It's funny - at the end of things, we tend to contemplate and glorify what happened. For example: the "glory days" of blogging. A lot of people think they have come to an end, and they look back nostalgically. Would I be right in saying that you didn't realize you valued them so much until they were "over?"
However, I think that sunsets can also symbolize life and new beginnings, whether good or bad.
In Luke's case, it was the beginning of a new adventure that would affect the rest of his life.
Like I mentioned before, the Coruscant sunset in AOTC was the beginning of the end of the Republic, and the beginning of war. It also signaled that "the shroud of the dark side [had] fallen."
The ROTS Coruscant sunset marked the beginning of the Purge and the dark reign of the Sith. The start of some of the darkest deeds Anakin would ever commit. The suit was near at hand.
For Obi-Wan, it was the beginning of his new life watching over Luke and waiting for the overthrow of the Empire.
The Lars', as previously stated, would take on a new role as "parents."
Lastly, Anakin and Padme began their new life together as husband and wife. (Actually, it's hard to tell whether this is a sunset or a sunrise, but I'm assuming it's a sunset because there's no way on God's green earth ANYONE could get me up at sunrise to get married, thank you very much! )
For us, watching the end of ROTS was a powerful visual, as we looked ahead to the New Hope all grown up. We knew that, despite Anakin's dark deeds and tormented soul, there was still hope for him - a new life, offered by his son. He could choose to change - sunset and night could turn to sunrise. "....Bring balance to the Force, not leave it in darkness...." We may have been left in darkness, but we knew that the sunrise would come, day would break, and Luke would save the day. * all LILWL collectively sigh*

This is such a nicely written blog with great insights! I love it! I've always loved George's imagery, and sunsets are a powerful tool to be used - I don't suppose I ever thought about all of them throughout the entire saga. The one that always stands out primarily in my mind is Luke standing on the dunes watching the binary sunset in A New Hope.
And perhaps (okay, this might be pushing it), you mentioned the duality of the imagery - how the sunset has been used to signify beginnings and endings. Perhaps the reason George loves that binary sunset is because of the dual sun - both a beginning and an ending can be represented in the one image.
Just a thought...and probably a silly one.

Wow, what a great analysis of the sunset imagery... check this out, it's a print I saw for sale online SUNSET ON THE REPUBLIC It says VOLUMES about ROTS....
The sunset has always provided dramatic moments (the Hero rides off into the sunset) but significance of beginnings never really struck me...
Just as a side note, me being rather scatterbrained today, in Key West, FL, people go down to the docks to watch the sun set into the Gulf of Mexico and applaud it when it's over....

Great blog, Jade!
Thanks for doing all the deep thinking for us - I really didn't have the time today - but your insights are well made and on the money.
I loved the Coruscant sunsets that appear to turn the capital into Hades as the Sith take over...

It's very interesting Nob - sunsets in Star Wars can be beautiful and romantic or really ominous and foreboding!

For me, the most important sunsets in "Star Wars" are in Episodes 4 and 3.
In Episode 4 Luke looks up at the sunsets and dreams of life off of Tatooine. He doesn't say this, but we just know he is dreaming youthful dreams of adventure far away.
Conversely, in Episode 3 we see his step-parents (Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru) gazing at the sunset, with Luke in their arms, and saying "goodbye" to their childhood fantasy and youthful dreams. Their lives are now set; not just because they have a baby, but because this child is valuable to the Empire, if he were to be found out.
Thanks for the blog, I never realized that there were THAT many sunsets in "Star Wars" until now.

Oh my goodness, Jade! That was AMAZING!!! I've always loved the sunsets in Star Wars, but I never could really explain what was so powerful about them. I tried explaining it to my sister once and it ended up something like this:
CDS: Well...you see...nostalgia...and, um, emotion....um...new beginnings...endings...oh, and music, too!...and that's why the sunsets are so great!
Ali: Huh?
Now I can just be like "here! read this!"
It's not my fault my sister can't understand my genius!
Anyways, really great entry!

I know, isn't it just so expressive?!

Oooh, good point!

Wow, great blog Jade! You are spot on with your sunset and sunrise analysis in all the movies. I find the twin suns of Tatooine especially significant. Not just for Luke and Leia, and their philosophical sunrise, but that the galaxy is divided in two ... Light and Dark, and that the Light is very powerful when given the chance to shine (two suns is definitely pretty intense!)
Again, wonderful blog!

Great blog!
And of course, when the sun sets, you can see the stars, so it makes sense that a sunset happened so early in Star Wars.

Thank you to give us such a nice and good analysis about this. I think you are awfully right.
In my case, the sunset I had been specially aware of about its meaning is the Coruscant sunset you can see behind Padme when she is crying, and when the night comes, Anakin decides to go and fight Mace Windu. For me this was a clear symbol of the beginning of the end of the Republic and the Jedi, the Light defeated by the Shadow.
Perhaps I had not been aware of the meaning of the other ones.
Nicely done.

...there's no way on God's green earth ANYONE could get me up at sunrise to get married, thank you very much! )
Aha, but what about the Force's green Naboo?
"....Bring balance to the Force, not leave it in darkness...." We may have been left in darkness, but we knew that the sunrise would come,
That's very profound.
Great blog!

Now that winter is beginning to abate somewhat, I've been noticing the rising of our own sun each morning on the way to work. It really is beautiful...from deep red, to pink, to orange, to yellow, to white. It's hard to believe something so beautiful is created by a perpetually raging furnace of power and light. Nice blog!

I went on a red-eye flight last summer and watched the sunrise out the window of the plane - it really was amazing!
Nice blog!

I like sunsets, but I'm definitely more of a sunrise girl. Did you know (I'm a science major so I must talk about this) that if you're shown a picture of a sunrise or sunset, there's actually no way to know the difference? Some sunrises look like sunsets and some sunsets look like sunrises. Sorry, tangent...
But I like sunrises because I like the idea of new/fresh beginnings as opposed to something ending. I am also a morning person.
I loved this blog though because George Lucas puts so much into his movies that you know has a deeper meaning, and I think this is a great example. I liked your analysis of all the different sunsets in the movies as well. Good job!

Absolutely! That's part of what makes Star Wars so awesome!

Cinematically, sunsets are a great way to symbolize endings, especially for films like SW, which GL says are mostly visual. The picture of a sunset can speak volumes.
Beautiful thoughts, Jade!
