A long time before May 19th 2005 I heard that there was a possibility that an EU character would be in Episode III. I was excited to say the least. I have always loved the EU, and was looking forward to seeing one of my favorites in a cameo appearance. Who would it be? What character would fit the part? I thought of all the possibilities.
People began to ask Pablo Hildalgo on his Q&A thread.
Is it Garm Bel Iblis? ect...
Pablo's answer was always no.
The more I thought about it the more I knew who it had to be. Quinlan Vos. He would be perfect. He is a Jedi during the right time period. He has a great look. He has an awesome story laid out in the
Republic comic series. He would be instanly recognizable to many Star Wars fans. How cool would it be to see his dred locks flying around as he fights battle droids? I know he "was in The Phantom Menace" so according to many he is not an EU character. He was not in the movie though. The background character his look was based on was in it, but not Quinlan. Quinlan was created in the EU for the EU.
So I decided to shoot the Question at Pabs.
Me: Pablo, any chance that we will see or hear about Quinlan Vos in ROTS?
Pabs: Here's a non-answer for you: Say, what is happening on Boz Pity anyway?
That confirmed it for me. He didn't say no, and he sidestepped the question. I felt confident that I would see my favorite comic book Jedi on the big screen. I began to think how cool he would look in real life, yellow stripe and all. Then I heard he was in the script. Yes! May 19th could come soon enough.
By this time in the comic series, Quinlan was still in limbo. It wasn't clear if he was still a good guy or if he had gone to the Dark side. I had been following his story ever since they introduced him in the
Emmisaries to Malastare arc. He lost his memory. He rescued Aayla. He defeated Dark Jedi. He fought Mace Windu and Count Dooku. He fought along side of Obi-Wan and Anakin, he joined the Separatists (or did he.) Every comic was too short and the wait for the next one too long. They couldn't have picked a better EU character. Quinlan already had established relationships with many main charaters from the movies. Dark Jedi or not, he had earned his place in this film. Quinlan Vos was so entagled in the events leading up to Revenge of the Sith, how could he not be in the movie?
So May 19th rolls around and I watch wide eyed as the name "Master Vos" is mentioned. I got goose bumps. I was watching the background of every scene. Where was he? The credits roll. Did I miss him? He wasn't in it. I was shocked. The info was incorrect. He was in the script, yes, but I found out later that his scene was never even filmed. No chance even for a deleted scene on the DVD.
Well since he wasn't in it, and they didn't show him die, then maybe he would show up in post ROTS literature, maybe even in the upcoming TV show. But flipping through the comic adaption I saw the unthinkable. The character I had grown to love and who had intrigued me in dozens of comics, killed, shot in the back. What a way for this great character to go. Talk about disrespect (don't even get me started on the way my other comic favorites Ki-Adi-Mundi and Aayla Secura went down.)
Well, they once again passed up on a great opporitunity to make us EU junkies extremely happy. I guess that's just the way it goes. For us Quinlan fans, we still have the Republic comics to read. Even though we know he dies, we still can see how he got to that point. Maybe the writers at Dark Horse can somehow make his death interesting and meaningful.
It still wouldn't be enough.
