I am sick and tired of all the EU bashing. I know everyone has a right to their opinion. You can either like the EU or not. That's fine, but I am tired of reading about how this story doesn't count because of this, or that's not canon because of that. Sorry to inform all of you EU haters out there, but most of the EU is canon, and there is nothing any of you can do about it. From what I understand from what I have gathered from the VIPs on the Message Boards, everything Star Wars that has been written is canon except for Infinities stuff. Plain and simple. So that means you can't pick and choose what "counts" or what doesn't. It all counts. I, like many others out there, do not like the book
The Crystal Star. Does that mean it's not canon just because we don't like it? Nope. It is just as relevant as the Clone Wars Era novels (which so many EU bashers seem to be ok with.)
"The EU is taking it too far." "It is not what the Creator...er...George Lucas intended." How do you know? Are you buddies with the big guy? He may not read and approve every story that comes out, but he sure does allow them to come out. Look at the spine of one of those
New Jedi Order books you hate so much. What does it say on the top? Lucas Books. Do you think Lucas would continue to let the books come out if he thought they were ruining his Vision for Star Wars? He has even incorporated EU elements into his movies. Coruscant came from the EU. Aayla Secura jumped from the comics onto the big screen in AOTC, and her EU master Quinlan Vos even gets a nod in Revenge of the Sith.
The Star Wars story started with the movies yes, but it is not the whole story. The story is expanded in books, comics, cartoons, games, short stories, and more. These stories are official and the people over at LucasFilm work extremely hard to get the best authors and keep everything in continuity. Of course mistakes are made. That's going to happen when you have so many stories out there, but they are pretty darn good at keeping everything straight. There are not nearly as many inconsistencies as others may want you to think. There are a some here and there, but for the most part they don't have much bearing on the Star Wars story as a whole. Who cares if Jaina Solo's age was wrong in
Dark Journey? So what if there are a couple different accounts as to how Vader lost his arm. Look at the larger picture people. Enjoy the stories. If you don't like them then don't read them. That's it.
I myself love most of the EU. I love how everything is linked and ties together. I would agree that some of the stories I don't like, but they are not my stories. Someone other than me or you was chosen to write these books and it is there story to tell. If you think you can do better, then start writing, get noticed, and maybe Sue will pick you to write the next one. Until that happens though none of us have the right to pick and choose what is canon and what is not.
Of course your opinion counts. You don't have to like the EU, but if you like it or not doesn't alter the fact that it's canon.
The Emperor was resurrected
Luke went to the darkside
The Yuzhann Vong exist
Chewie died
Leia and Han have kids
Boba Fett lives
It all happens. Deal with it.
