I loved
Star Wars: Tales comics. Ever since they first came out, I always wondered one thing. What stories were "in universe" or continuity, and which stories were what we now call "infinities"? I know that the last few issues were clearly labeled as to which stories were and were not in continuity, but that wasn't the case for the first 20 or so issues. Then came the trade paper back
Star Wars: Visionaries. When the announcement for this comic came out, it said that some of the stories would be in continuity. When I bought the book though there was no indication in the table of contents which stories were continuity. My main interest was the first story, the one with Darth Maul coming back and fighting Obi-Wan on Tatooine. My basic rule of thumb for
Tales and
Visionaries stories, to decide if they are in Star Wars continuity, is the following: if the story fits into and doesn't grossly contradict established continuity, then in is part of the Star Wars story.
The thing about the Visionaries Darth Maul story was...it didn't contradict anything as far as I could tell. It was a cool story, but it was such a stretch. Did Darth Maul somehow survive being cut in half? I mean it was in the movie, but we did see Boba Fett fall into the Sarlacc pit in the movie, and we all know that wasn't his end. So Maul survived and came back to face Obi one last time, only to be shot in the face by Owen Lars. Ok. I guess I can live with that...but I'm still skeptical...wait...what's Pablo say there?
Star Wars Insider, Issue 85, Ask the Master. In response to a question about the Darth Maul
Visionaries story and another
Tales story and where they fit into the Star Wars timeline, Pablo says this: "Both tales that you describe are "Infinities," meaning they exist outside Star Wars continuity."
That would have been nice to know before. So I guess that answers that. Thanks Pablo. One down, so many more to go. Did Darth Vader really kill the Dark woman after Mara Jade located her? Did Mace Windu really find his lightsaber crystals on the planet Hurikane after fighting stone aliens? Did Luke really fight an assassin droid while training on Dagobah? Was there really a Jedi named Tu'Ala at Geonosis? We may never know for sure...
