The Unsinkable Titanic
As a little girl, I was always fascinated with history. And now that I'm an adult that fascination has not changed. This could be the reason why I'm fascinated with Star Wars, but that is for another blog. I've always ponder the fact of why I'm so fascinated with history. I guess I can thank my father for this mild obsession and fascination I have with it, because he also has an obsession and fascination with it. He is very much a history "buff" as I like to call him. His main history obsession or fascination is with WWII, or war for that fact, and the impact it has had on our world. Mine, on the other hand, borders on the line of romance mixed in with history. What can I say; I'm a romantic at heart. I guess that is why I love reality based westerns so much. Moving right along...

I'm sure the majority of you have seen the movie "Titanic". A love story mixed in with reality or history is a win-win situation. I can tell you that my fascination with the "Titanic" began in college, long before the movie was even being considered for the big screen. The sheer thought of an "unsinkable" man made luxury sea worthy vessel the size of four football fields (I think) is just amazing to me. Ponder this thought...the size of four football fields. That's huge, plus the fact that it could float, until it hit an iceberg. In reality, the movie was pure fun to watch, but I want to see it up front and in person. I want to feel, touch and experience the "real" Titanic, the impact it made in history and the lives it affected on that fateful night as it voyaged across the sea.

TITANIC: The Artifact Exhibition is making its debut in San Francisco and will be on display until September 2006. After this date, the Exhibit will continue its voyage across the world for all to have a chance to experience the "real" Titanic story. On August 5th, 2006, my family and I will be making a voyage of our own to experience this historical exhibit. I can't wait to see the "real" story of Titanic and the legacy that has been left behind.

Fact: This blockbuster exhibition has traveled to more than 50 cities internationally, and has been seen by more than 16 million people worldwide, making it the most successful and enduring exhibition in history (quoted from the web page for TITANIC: The Artifact Exhibition).

Impressive, most impressive. The "real" story of Titanic has touched many lives and its legacy will continue to do so.

Fact: The collection of artifacts, stories and photography included in this exhibition illustrate the magnificence and glory of Titanic. You will see more than 300 actual artifacts from the wreck site, including never-before-seen artifacts that will be unveiled with the San Francisco exhibition, and a 30,000-pound section of the ship's hull. The exhibition also features remarkable re-creations of the Grand Staircase, a First Class Stateroom and much, much more (quoted from the web page for TITANIC: The Artifact Exhibition).

Now this is what I'm talking about. I think I might experience every single emotion at this exhibit, especially when it comes time to view that 30,000-pound section of the ship's hull. I will try to be a strong Jedi and not shed a tear, but alas, I don't think that will happen. I have a feeling I will be sobbing like a little girl again.

Fact: A first-class ticket for a parlor suite onboard Titanic cost $4,350. Today, these luxurious accommodations would cost approximately $50,000 (quoted from the web page for TITANIC: The Artifact Exhibition).

I'm glad inflation has stayed in check throughout history. I could not afford first class back then and I can't afford it now.

If you live in San Francisco or near it, I hope you will take advantage of this historical moment and go visit the exhibit. You just might learn something about it and it could change your life, or not. In any event, I'm looking forward to my own personal voyage where I will be hit by a dose of reality and get to experience the true historical legacy of Titanic. I'm sure I will be touched by the display of real objects, real people and real stories.
