I like nice men
Han: Come on, admit it. Sometimes you think I'm all right.
Leia: Occasionally...Maybe...When you aren't acting like a scoundrel.
Han: Scoundrel? Scoundrel?...I like the sound of that.
Leia: Stop that.
Han: Stop what?
Leia: Stop that...My hands are dirty.
Han: My hands are dirty too. What are you afraid of?
Leia: Afraid?
Han: You're trembling.
Leia: I'm not trembling.
Han: You like me because I'm a scoundrel. There aren't enough scoundrels in your life.
Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han: I'm nice men.
Leia: Very nice...[fade to kiss]

*Han scoops up Leia into his arms and they passionately kiss before they are rudely interrupted by golden rod, C3P0. Talk about a kill-joy moment. Stupid golden rod destroying the moment we all were hoping would lead to a path in the saga that is not unnatural, in this case.*

**********************************************************************************

Remember that "interrupted kiss" scene in ESB? I've watched ESB 5,789,654 times and for some reason that scene finally stuck with me for the first time. Why? I don't know why. I'm trying to figure it out now by writing this blog. Possibly the reason could be that I have this driving Force to analyze why in nine Corellian hells Leia would have the urge to say, "I happen to like nice men". Could it be because she was nervous by Han's motives? Was it to distract Han from making advances on her? Is it because Da Maker himself wrote it in the script just to tease us? Who knows...I don't know. The only thing I do know is that I can relate to that moment in that scene only because I also have been swooped off my feet by "bad" men or in this case a "scoundrel".

First, let me say that I've NEVER had the privilege of having a handsome scoundrel like Han move in for a passionate kiss like that "kiss" in ESB (that one is for you Hansgirl). I've had my passionate "bad boy" moments, but nothing compared to what Leia experienced with Han. I remember my first reaction upon viewing that scene in ESB; I was on the edge of my seat thinking, "You fool, Leia. Go for it. Why are you walking away? He's HOT. Follow him, follow him, follow him". Thank the Force things turned out good between our beloved couple and not between brother and sister.

I like nice men too. It's a shame there aren't more of the "Han" types around in the world, at least from my point of view. He may be a scoundrel but he is a noble scoundrel that believes in fighting for the good cause, besides picking up a pay check in the process. That being said, I'm not having as much luck finding a scoundrel like Han. I must be visiting the wrong Cantina's or hitchhiking my way around the galaxy on the wrong transports.

Come to think of it, I've used that line in the past. I think it was more along the lines of, "I'm into nice men" and not "I happen to like nice men". Obviously that line did not work for me. The end result was a move by my advancer followed by an evil grin. Lesson learned? Run, Mina, run...And don't look back. In any event, I've just come to realize that "nice" men are far and few in between in this galaxy. They either are married or live on another planet. Maybe I should go back to my original pick up line of "Coffee, tea or me?" I do have to say that I've had more success with this line then "I like nice men". Maybe because I don't think men are expecting it from a "nice" girl like me. :p :D ]:)

sooooooooo well put, my dear! :D

I think a lot of the dialogue may have been driven by the "social conditions" of the time - it's interesting that you should bring up ESB - I'm in the midst of re-reading the OT novelizations right now, and you can tell that GL hadn't honed his truly original "SW-lingo" just yet.

"Nice men" who are also HOT and noble...with a pinch of scoundrel ARE out there...my brother-in-law being one of them....wanna move to Ohio?!? ;)

I'm just waiting for "a nice man" to knock on my door but that's not going to happen so, I'M DOOMED to be alone for the rest of my life.

Yep, a pick up line. Never really noticed it before until lately...And, I've actually used it a couple of times. But that did not stop the guy who was going after me.

I agree...But I do remember GL quoting that he wanted a more of a 20's to 40's feeling movie. Hence, Gone with the Wind feeling.

I think Leia was playing hard to get when she said that. She knew that she liked Han big time and the way to get a scoundrel to love you more is to make him work for it. Scoundrels love the thrill of the chase. She knew that and played him well. So romantic!

NIce men usually are trod upon by the girl. Women say they don't want scoundrels but thats always who they go after. But then again being a nice guy worked for me! I came in from the rain at the grocery we worked at together in HS. I started bagging at her register looking like a drowned puppy dog. She says that is where she fell in love with me and that she knew she would marry me. I didn't even ask her out until 7 months later. 15 yrs later still together.

Jedi Master Nina, I used a variation of that dialogue on purpose when I was dating the girl that became my wife!!! I emphasized "real man" instead of "scoundrel." We had been dating for a few days, and it went something like this:

Girl: Terek, you can be arrogant sometimes...
Terek: I am not arrogant. It is just that I am the first real man that you have ever encountered.
Girl: You arrogant *(^&**&#!!! [moves a little bit away]
Terek: [holds her hand] It is true. [looks at her straight in the eyes] You bring out arrogance in me...
Girl: I like nice guys.
