Dirty Little Secrets
Anakin: We could keep it a secret...
Padme: We'd be living a lie. I couldn't do that. Could you Ani?

~Attack of the Clones~

Even Jedi are not safe from committing crimes of passion in the heat of the moment. What else, besides greed and power, would make a bright, intelligent, good looking and talented Jedi Knight do irrational and insane things such as falling to the Dark Side, murdering every Jedi known to the Star Wars Universe and attempt to kill his wife and best friend all for the sake of crazy love? Anakin Skywalker's fall to the Dark Side was heart wrenching to watch to say the least, but it is not far from reality.

Reflecting upon the media these past weeks, I can't help but to notice that there are a lot of 'normal, sane' people doing strange things these days. Such as 'irrational, insane' things when it comes to the affairs of the heart. Take for instance the Lisa Nowak story. An astound astronaut, or 'astroNUT'* in this case, a married mother of three children, packed a steel mallet, a 4-in. knife, a BB gun and large trash bags and drove 900 miles in diapers and a disguise with a plan to murder a woman viewed as a romantic rival for a love interest that wasn't even her own husband?* Un-freaking-believable.*

What I find most fascinating about Lisa Nowak's story is the fact that she spit in the face of what was normal, ignored all common sense and lost all control over her personal life all in the name of blinded love. Sound familiar? You bet. Now, I could sit here and blog about all the parallels and similarities between Lisa Nowak and Anakin Skywalker's story; both had to undergo rigorous training and stringent selection procedures to join an elite body in their profession; both had the 'right stuff' and were considered 'top guns' in their profession; both had failing relationships due to the pressurized stress of their jobs; both contemplated murder. With one minor exception: Anakin got away with it, Lisa did not. But I'm not going to go there. What I want to focus on is one main ingredient for falling to the Dark Side when it comes to affairs of the heart, in a recipe currently referred to as 'crazy' love.*

Anakin: If you are suffering as much as I am, please tell me.
Padme: I can't... We can't... It's not possible.
Anakin: Anything is possible, Padme, listen to me.
Padme: No you listen! We live in a real world, come back to it. You're studying to become a Jedi, I'm... I'm a senator. If you follow your thoughts through to conclusion, it will take us to a place we cannot go, regardless of the way we feel about each other.
Anakin: Then you do feel something!
Padme: I will not let you give up your future for me.
Anakin: You're asking me to be rational. That is something that I know I cannot do. Believe me, I wish I could just wish away my feelings, but I can't.

~Attack of the Clones~

Irrational behavior, when it comes to affairs of the heart, always seems to go astray when obsessive thoughts are created from not receiving affections from another or when love goes south of the border for a bad case of Montezuma's Revenge. Everybody has 'dirty little secrets' or 'skeletons in the closet' so to speak. And if you think you don't have any dirty little secrets now? Don't worry, your turn will come someday. :D

I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I too have 'dirty little secrets' and have done some irrational things when it comes to affairs of the heart. Although, I have to admit, I've never done anything quite like this or suffered from Montezuma's Revenge nor do I ever want to. The strangest feelings that I can recall from those past experiences was that the crazy act I was doing felt so natural, perfectly normal and rational, at that time, in my mind. And nobody could have talked me out of it or told me differently. By the way, don't get any brilliant ideas and try to interrogate me about my dirty little past while I'm at CIV. I simply will turn to you and say "I don't recall" or "I plead the fifth". :D

What is it that drives good people to do irrational things or exhibit odd behavior all for the sake of crazy love? Is if for the pure adrenaline rush and excitement of the act? What would cause a normal, sane person to unleash their animal instincts for unbridled love and lose all control over any sound judgment or common sense? Do intense affairs of the heart or relationships make us act on hidden impulses that are normally repressed or held back? What I find sad, even more shocking, is when sane people realize that what they are doing is completely wrong and insane, but can't stop themselves. Anakin knew that what he was doing was wrong, yet he did not have the will power to stop himself from contemplating heinous crimes in the heat of passion. Neither did Lisa Nowak.

I am most certain of one simple thing. If any of us had to face Dr. Phil for committing an act of this nature, I'm pretty sure Dr. Phil would tell us to snap out of it, take a chill pill and than proceed to smack us down on live TV. I sure would love to see Dr. Phil do a psycho analysis of Anakin Skywalker. Whew baby, what a fun smack down that would be to watch, eh? :D

For those interested in reading more about the Lisa Nowak story, here is a link to one of many articles about her grim fate.

One giant step for 'man' kind; one huge step backwards for the 'female' race.

No, not stupid college, stupid astroNUT! :D

Let me tell ya, I usually don't follow current affairs in the news, but this story had way too many similarities to Anakin's story. Besides, it had sex in it. How could I not blog about it? :^O

What is it that drives good people to do irrational things or exhibit odd behavior all for the sake of crazy love?

I think that on a certain level relationships benefit from a little craziness :8}, definately not on the scale of Anakin or Nowak. I know that if I stuck with logic and avoided giving into the occasional odd behavior :8} my wife and I probably would not have ended up together. I guess the trick is knowing when you are about to go too far. A good indicator is whether its legal (well at least a misdemeanor :8}).

Great blog, I was just thinking the same thing earlier today. When Anakin see's Obiwan come out of Padme's ship, after already sensing him in her apartment and having suspicions, he reacts in the way many men, including myself would. He loses it!! We like to think we're rational but in the end we are controlled by emotion and if you already think that your lover is involved with someone else and they come marching off her ship to you that confirms what you thought.

When a man loves a woman... he's pretty much certifiable lol

What is it that drives good people to do irrational things or exhibit odd behavior all for the sake of crazy love? You know, I wonder this same thing almost constantly. All I can muster to rationalize such things is: A. One or both significant others a relationship are not getting the attention, affection, or "Love" they so desire from the other. B. Sexually Deprived!! Ok, that should be A.:8} or C. Physical Attraction is no longer exsisting for one of the members and has found that "Attraction" elsewhere.

IMHO, it's the FEAR of being alone.

Nice one, my Queen. The similarities between Ani and Lisa Nowak are too scary.

Well done! Excellent analogy of the Nowak affair and the Anakin affair!! :^O They both certainly had their fall to the Dark Side, didn't they? Similarities certainly, but of course some differences, too. In the end, both made some Baaaaaad choices. You're right, Anakin got away with it and Nowak didn't!!

Great job, my darling!! :x

Women like Lisa Nowak donâ?TMt realize how good they have it. There are thousands, maybe millions, of women who give almost anything to have a chance to be an astronaut, and she blows it over a man!

Men are a dime a dozen. Not to mention that she already HAD oneâ?¦ we donâ?TMt know the state of her marriage of course, but men are not interchangeable. You can get rid of one without having another waiting in the wings.

Women have made giant strides forward in the last 50 years and then some idiot comes along and pokes a hole in our bubbleâ?¦Ackâ?¦

Crazy Love or is it LUST? Or is it just some need to do something wild and unconventional? How many broken hearts, broken marriages, broken homes and broken lives have occurred because someone got a wild idea.

Yes, it seems normal, natural, and wildly exciting while it's taking placeâ?¦ but someone always gets hurt, and it's always the one who says â??I can handle it.â?ý

It must be middle age hitting me hard, because when I see this sort of stuff happening to younger women I just want to scream at them to STOP and THINK rationally. It's NOT worth it!

â??Dirty Little Secretsâ?ý we all have them, trueâ?¦And if you think I'm telling MINE at C-IV, forget itâ?¦ I'll be there sleeping with my own husbandâ?¦

You know, no you don't, but the day this happened in Florida (where every loco/loca comes to commit poo-doo) my next door neighbor mentioned that once she got herself in trouble because of a crime of passion. The guy had to get a restraining order against her.
She explained to me that something comes over you and it's like you don't know what you are doing. But I fail to understand how love can make you do something that bad to another person and make you crazy enough to think you can get away with it.

Now Anakin suffered morally for his treachery only because he BECAME THE LAW!!! and there was no one there to prosecute him.

Though we have let to do anything irrational in the name of love (unless you consider our marriege to the wife) we fear the day that we do, and fear even more Montezuma's Revenge as you put it. Because for someone like us it's no doubt going to be uglier than usual. Frightening.

Yup. That's good enough reason to go insane and go on a killing spree. :^O Just kidding. All the reasons you point out are valid to make any person rock their boat when it comes to the affairs of the heart!! ;) But does that mean doing these things is right? Not when it comes to breaking the law and messing with innocent lives. Food for thought...;)

Powerful blog, Mina. Powerful blog indeed!

I understand what you're saying. I understand the connections you're making. I understand what drove both Anakin and that Nowak woman to do the things they did.

The crux of both their problems was that neither had true control (I know that's what you're saying), and, for that, many are left to suffer. There's a difference between doing something silly and doing something downright crazy (where you lose total control of yourself). I know this may seem harsh, but . . . if there is someone who would drive you (anyone) to lose control of yourself, he/she is not worth it. That's not real love. Plain and simple.

You know Granny, the article in People magazine goes into that part. It's not easy to get as far as she did in that program (I can't remember the percentage that don't make it). It cuts deeper for women when something like this happens, that is for sure. ;)

I often see a much sadder "end" to these *crimes of passion*...involvement of the children. I truly do not fully understand what drives these people to do these things, and it breaks my heart. Everyone loses *control* every once in a while, but the difference between losing control to regain it and losing control to never regain it can be a thin line. Some of us are better adapted to realize what we are doing is wrong, while some of us are not. It can be a sad, sad world at times

One of my fav sayings in the whole saga. Yes it is befitting to say the least, my friend. ;)

C'mon Mina, you can tell us. It's not like we'd post it all over the internet...Mina has dirty secrets...surprise...surprise.

Both you and Arwen have the WRONG impression of me. All over a little blog called "I Love You".;)

Though we have let to do anything irrational in the name of love (unless you consider our marriege to the wife) we fear the day that we do,

Fear is an emotion that most feel is unnatural...In reality, fear can drive out the animal instinct in all of us. ;)
