Chick Flicks?
I was listening to the radio the other day and the morning host mentioned a list from Oprah Winfrey's magazine about the 50 greatest "chick flicks" of all time. I wasn't too terribly interested at first, not being an Oprah fan and all (I know that must be a sacrilege here in Chicago!) but then I stuck with the story because I thought it might be worth a chuckle or two. And I was not disappointed. The typical stuff was there... "Ghost," "Thelma & Louise," "Titanic," "Dirty Dancing," a few oldies from the 40's. The top movie was something called "Morocco." I have never even heard of that movie... I believe they said it starred Marlene Dietrich. She didn't go through the whole list, just kinda hopped around, but it was enough to make me wonder why I like the films I do, and why those films (or most of them anyway... "Alien" was on there and I do love that series) were not on the list. Am I so strange compared to the other female types out there? I don't think I am.

Now, I don't have anything against some of the films, but some I just don't care for. I saw "Ghost" once, maybe twice. It was ok. I liked "Titanic," but really could have done without the whole Jack & Rose thing... the story was dramatic enough without adding a fictional romance. Why not tell some of the stories of the actual people onboard? "Thelma & Louise?" They went on a crime spree and killed themselves... I don't care for that one too much. "Dirty Dancing"... ugh. I do like some oldies... mostly Hitch-#### films ("Rear Window") or anything with Jimmy Stewart ("Harvey" is the best!).

Since I'm blogging on the Official Star Wars site, I think you've all got a pretty good idea of what I consider to be my ultimate Chick Flick... and I would venture a guess that many of the chicks here feel the same way ( and I use the term "chick" with the utmost in respect and admiration). I'm now speaking to my SW sisters... How do you feel about SW being your chick flick? Do you feel odd or out of the loop? Is it strange for girls to like a "guy" flick? This reminds me of something else another talk show host on this station said when it was announced that the original SW films were coming out on DVD. She kept referring to SW as a guys movie. Not once did she think that any females listening might be SW fans. Why is that? Is it really a secret that there are so many SW fans that are female? Females of all ages, no less! Are people taken aback when you tell them that SW is your favorite movie (or series of movies, however you look at it)?

I have a pretty wide variety of other movies I like and have in my DVD collection, but when it comes to chick flicks it always has been and always will be Star Wars for me... even if it means I'll never be in O Magazine.

Such a loss.... yeah, right.... ]:)

BTW, the radio station I referred to is not one I normally listen to. Oddly enough I usually listen to a local Catholic station and the morning host on there is a big Sci-Fi fan... It's from him that I first learned the wonders of "Firefly!" :)
