WhoooBoy!!!!
This is a just a quickie entry... I have other much more impressive entries in the works. No, no... I really do, I swear. Pinky swear... well not with that pinky.... ;)

Yesterday, I attended a Godzilla convention with a friend of mine. It's the second one I've gone to and they are fun. I'm more of a Gamera fan, but that's okay. Anyhoo, I had the privilege of meeting up with my dear friend, EwanandHaydenFan5... for the second day in a row, I might add. Am I lucky or what? We were together with JediMelindaWolf to celebrate JediPrincess77's birthday on Friday night (blog entry coming soon.... I promise!).

Anyway, E&HF5's hubby, along with their adorable daughter, is a big Godzilla fan... and a nice guy, too. He also loves Doctor Who, which only increases his standing in my opinion. :D

But, on to the point of this entry. At G-Fest, some of the vendors sell Star Wars stuff in addition to the expected Godzilla goodies. While I was hanging with E&HF5, she drew my attention to a vendor that was selling DVD copies of the Star Wars Holiday Special. Yes, that SW Holiday Special.

Now, I have never ever seen the dreaded Holiday Special... and some might envy me for that. ;) But, I always felt like I was missing something. Some essential part of fandom, no matter how god-awful it might be... and it was truly god-awful.....

Yes, I spent my last $8 on the Star Wars Holiday Special... and today, I watched it.

:O :O :O :O :O :O

I have to say, that was the most.... um..... er......... unusual bit of programming I have ever seen. In my entire life. Ever.

Now, some bits weren't all that bad. Mark, Carrie and Harrison (although he does look like he's in pain throughout) did the best they could. They are troupers and should be given medals. Carrie even has a lovely singing voice... or is that Princess Leia? Art Carney, the great Art Carney even did the best he could. Bless him. The cartoon that introduces us to Boba Fett for the first time was actually pretty good. Kudos to the ones responsible for that.

The other stuff..... the Harvey Korman bits, the Bea Arthur :::::shudder::::: bits were just........ well, I'm not exactly sure what they were.......... ?:|

Don't even get me started on the "musical" numbers with Dihann Carroll and Jefferson Starship.............. :::::must.... purge.... from.... memory:::::

One thing I didn't know was how long the Holiday Special is. It's like 2 hours long!!!! I should get a medal!! :O

The Holiday Special just goes to show you shouldn't let studio heads decide what entertainment is.... you can just tell a bunch of guys in suits that most likely never saw Star Wars in the first place put this whole thing together... and those who were bound by contracts were made to "star" in it.

Now, don't get me wrong, I am not sorry in the least that I bought the Star Wars Holiday Special. I was very excited to do so... just ask E&HF5, she'll tell you. I debated a whole three seconds before plunking down my money. The copy is actually pretty good, too. Well, as good as it can be at any rate and the vintage commercials and news breaks were priceless! Brought back tons of memories.

Would I recommend the Holiday Special to anyone who has not had the pleasure (term used very loosely)....???? Yes, I would. If only for the experience of having seen it. Somehow, I feel more complete. I don't know how I missed it way back when I was 11..... odds are, my Mom wanted to watch Columbo or something..... but I've seen it now and can see it any time I choose. Which probably won't be any time soon. I'm just sayin'...... :p

Oh, I LOVED the Holiday Special!!! And I was always bummed that they never reran it. EVER! I guess everyone just wanted to sweep it under the rug and forget it was ever made. But we will NEVER FORGET!!:D I saw it not too long ago, when JP77 linked it from YouTube. (you can find anything on YT--obviously!!) They broke it up into 6 or 7 parts, and the video quality wasn't very good, but you got the idea.

So you found it on VHS? I really, really want one!!!

odds are, my Mom wanted to watch Columbo or something..... Ha! funny you should say that! My parents were HUGE Columbo fans!

Which probably won't be any time soon. I'm just sayin'...... Yeah, it kinda sticks with you for a while!:p

Yeah, I wouldn't say I didn't like the Holiday Special... it just leaves you with an odd after taste, I suppose. :p

The copy I got is on DVD, but you can tell it went through many VHS copies beforehand.... ;)

My Mom LOVED Peter Falk. She was nutso about him, so we had to watch Columbo.... no matter what else was going on. Oh, and just one more thing (;)), Columbo was a cool show. :D

I watched it on a website but keep trying to buy it. I'm like aWeird Al in the White And Nerdy video. But it seems to got for almost $20 on Ebay and it's more than I want to spend on it.

The cartoon ROCKS!!!!! I keep pulling that video up all the time on the web to watch.

Really, Lucas should just release it and let us all have a good copy of it. It's out there, like Nosferatu....ordered destroyed, but still lives on and always will.

I've never seen the Holiday Special. I've been waiting for years to see it, just to say that I have. I've never seen it on TV or on DVD or something anywhere! Anywhere! I guess that doesn't surprise me, as I've obviously heard how terrible it is, but I still want to see it!

I don't have any qualms with the "Star Wars Holiday Special". You have to watch it for what it is: an introduction to "Star Wars" for the preschool crowd who missed the first movie and their slightly older brothers and sisters who needed a reminder of why they liked it so much and that they REALLY wanted to see the sequel.

It's WAY more fun if you do your own Wookiee translations, trust me.;)

I really do love the HS. I have to watch it every year around Christmas (or should I say BFD) time. It's amazing how some of that stuff was allowed on a TV show intended for kids, huh? Wookiee ####!

Oh, I LOVED the Holiday Special!!!
See? I'm not the only one.;) (Thanks for having my back, Babe!)

You have taken your first step into a larger world. :p

It's like some weird initiation or rite of passage every Star Wars fan has to go through I guess. Hee hee. I did see it when I was a very wee lass, but I think because of that I have really good, almost dreamy, memories of TSWHS. Just images and feelings mostly. The Boba Fett toon is awesome, and I don't care how cheesy it all is, its too cool to see mark, carrie, and harrison! I agree though - the musical numbers by DC and JS were atrocious. If anything, those bits are what really made it horrifying.

Can't wait to hear about your other times with the girls. Oh and I LOVE Godzilla too! So jealous!

I have 2 copies on dvd of this special. There were some very cool things in it. yeah Harvey the crossdressing cooking show may have been weird but the animated debut of Boba fett was great and that whole 20 minute cartoon was well worth watching the thing.

Watching 5 minutes of Wookies at home speaking without subtitles was also something strange but hey it was the 70s, the drug joke and sexual inuendos in it were also strange for a "kids" program. Oh well so were the 70s.
