Qui-Gon Knew Padme Was Amidala
The great (and sometimes trying) thing about having a young son is that you get to watch certain shows and movies over and over again. Fortunately, my little boy loves Star Wars and the current episode heavy on the rotation is The Phantom Menace.

This film was once my least favorite of the six films, mostly because of Jar-Jar. But having watched it again for the up-teenth time, I have learned to cope with his shenanigans. Anyway, more to the point, I always thought that Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan were surprised by Padme's deception on her true identity. Now I am not so sure.

To me, Qui-Gon Jinn was the one that held most true to the ideals of the Jedi. He obviously was extremely knowledgeable of the Force given his instruction of Yoda and Obi-Wan on how to become a Force ghost! Considering that, surely he could see through a talented, yet young girl like Padme.

It also adds an added twist to some of their conversations on Tatooine. When Captain Panaka insists that the handmaiden come along, he and Qui-Gon exchange a look that is more meaningful than a tag-along would bring. The Jedi Master even says, "This is not a good idea."

Later, Qui-Gon chastises Padme, "The Queen trusts my judgement and you should too young handmaiden." If he knows her true identity, this is a bigger jab that it seems on the surface!

Anyway, it is something to think about the next time you pop TPM into your DVD player....

First off -- hiya!
Second -- I'm not sure I follow your reasoning. You cite a couple of instances in which Qui-Gon seemed not to know. So why do you think he did?

If I remember, the novelization says Qui-Gon did know her identity. But a more interesting question is if Qui-Gon followed the living force, why did he have the cheat Watto on the chance cube? Wouldn't it have landed on the color representing Anakin, or maybe Shmi was to be freed instead.

Hi Stooge and Elflord!

I've been doing more thinking / research on Qui-Gon and I believe that he was one of the few practioners of the Living Force. If I understand it correctly, the Living Force focuses on the present and awareness/compassion for those around you (as opposed to the more galactic Unifying Force).

My examples of this are his various Yoda-like sayings - "Be mindful of the Living Force", "We will be patient", "I'm sure a solution will present itself", "Feel, do not think", "Your focus determines your reality", "Finding him was the will of the Force", etc.

As such, I would think Qui-Gon's Jedi skill would be best to detect Padme's deception. I'm not sure if I am explaining myself well here. It's just a theory :)

I forgot to respond to your question, Elflord.

I think Qui-Gon knew the chance cube was a loaded die. Especially since Watto was the one to assign colors for his own cube to the two slaves involved! He used the Force to help things along. It does raise a debate though. Like you said, if finding him is the will of the Force, he shouldn't have to use the Force to produce the right outcome.

It's like that joke about a man who is trapped in a flood but turns down rescue from a boat and a helicopter, sauing that God will rescue him. Then he dies in the flood, goes to heaven, and asks God why He didn't save him. God responds, "I sent you a boat and a helicopter. What else did you want?!"

You bring up a good point about Watto. Anakin was the more valued of the two. He could fix everything at the shop which is probably why Watto got rid of Shmi later.

And something else that bothers me about TPM, the Gungans and Naboo didn't get along. What's up with that? Padme sounds all peace loving but her own planet there is discrimination. To a dark place this takes us...

Interesting. I, too, have noticed this. Last night I watched TPM, and I saw what you saw.
Awesome blog!

Thanks Miniforcex!

Yes, Elflord, I was thinking the same thing. Anakin is obviously very talented in the shop (and podracing skill helps too!), plus he is so young with many "productive" years left. But I guess he bet everything on Sebulba on the Boonta Eve race and so he lost everything - hence his destitute appearing in AOTC!

I wonder how Shmi came to be married to Cleig Lars. I'm sure it was mentioned in AOTC, but I can't remember. I'll have to check it out sometime!

he lost everything
In the game Bounty Hunter, which I think is canon, you learn that Watto did loose everything, if him running a small shop on the street wasn't evidence enough. And I also think Qui-gon knew of Padmé's deception. But he had no reason to confront her, after all it was a very clever thing to do, and under the circumstances, justifiable.
And a couple of my friends figured it out before it was revealed the first time we saw it. And they don't have jedi powers.

If you watch TPM DVD and listen to the audio commentary, I think George Lucas actually says (during the scene when Padme reveals herself to the Gungans) that Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan did/do know Padme is the Queen.
