The great (and sometimes trying) thing about having a young son is that you get to watch certain shows and movies over and over again. Fortunately, my little boy loves Star Wars and the current episode heavy on the rotation is The Phantom Menace.
This film was once my least favorite of the six films, mostly because of Jar-Jar. But having watched it again for the up-teenth time, I have learned to cope with his shenanigans. Anyway, more to the point, I always thought that Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan were surprised by Padme's deception on her true identity. Now I am not so sure.
To me, Qui-Gon Jinn was the one that held most true to the ideals of the Jedi. He obviously was extremely knowledgeable of the Force given his instruction of Yoda and Obi-Wan on how to become a Force ghost! Considering that, surely he could see through a talented, yet young girl like Padme.
It also adds an added twist to some of their conversations on Tatooine. When Captain Panaka insists that the handmaiden come along, he and Qui-Gon exchange a look that is more meaningful than a tag-along would bring. The Jedi Master even says, "This is not a good idea."
Later, Qui-Gon chastises Padme, "The Queen trusts my judgement and you should too young handmaiden." If he knows her true identity, this is a bigger jab that it seems on the surface!
Anyway, it is something to think about the next time you pop TPM into your DVD player....
