Is Luke Just Lucky?
I was watching the Empire Strikes Back and a thought occurred to me. How is it that Luke was one of the last people to take off from Hoth, yet they can peacefully cruise to Degobah. Meanwhile Han, Chewie, Leia, and Threepio have to run for their lives against three Star Destroyers and a bunch of TIE fighters?

I guess because Vader just missed the Millennium Falcon that he ordered intensive pursuit of that particular ship. Still, you'd think with the size of the Imperial force there, they'd have some spare resources to catch other fleeing Rebels.

It just doesn't make sense...

I think it's just one of those things...

Actually I thought of this before as well, and I guess there just wasn't enough time in the story to have Luke being bothered with, and they had to get him to Dagobah quickly to move the film along. ;)

The ESB Radio Drama notes that there's only one Star Destroyer left at Hoth. All the others were ordered by Vader to pursue the Millenium Falcon. But even if you discount the radio drama, Vader had no way of knowing Luke would be flying out seperately. And, knowing Vader's temper, Imperial officers would not attempt to second-guess Vader nor ask him to reconsider his order to for all available ships to pursue the Falcon.

He doesn't have luck, he has the Force! I thought that most of the Imperial Fleet had left Hoth before Luke did... and he was going in a different direction....

In my experience, there's no such thing as--

eh, forget it, you know the rest. ;)

When Vader is at the Hoth base, he's pursuing what he thinks is Luke, but really it's Leia's force that he senses. And Luke could have left on the other side of the planet avoiding any left over imperials.

Well, Luke had the ability to go into hyperspace, the Millenium Falcon could not do this at the time. I think that explains it.

Luke also was on a couse to Dagobah, a planet not too highly known in the galaxy. The escape would have been easy, for reasons above and this. That, and it's easier to get a tractor beam lock on the Falcon than on an X-wing.
