We all think of Palpatine as smart, cunning, sinister, greedy, powerful, and; WHAT??? That doesn't go there? Stupidly blatant?! As a matter of fact, it does...

We all know that Luke did not have any intentions of turning to the dark side. Right?
We all know that Palpatine wanted Luke to turn to the dark side. Right??
If Palps is indeed as smart and cunning as we all think he is, than why is he so darn blatant? Why does he tell Luke,
"Strike me down and your path to the dark side will be complete."?
Will that really attract him to the dark side, by telling him that he will be evil if he does something that Palps wants? That's like trying to poison somebody by saying
"Hey, drink this stuff and you'll die!!"
Granted, Palpatine did do a great job with Anakin, making the dark side seem a bit useful, but with Luke, he makes it seem like something obviously bad, and not one bit attractive. Would Luke have perhaps turned if Palpatine wasn't so obvious with his reasoning?? Who knows?
