It's My Lightsaber And I'll Do What I Want
In the most recent edition of Bantha Tracks Online, readers voted on their Top Ten Favorite Lightsaber moments of the Star Wars saga. http://www.starwars.com/hyperspace/member/banthaonline/f20060124/indexp4.html

No surprise, the winning moment is the "Battle of the Heroes" - Obi-Wan vs. Anakin at the climax of Revenge of the Sith.

No surprise #2. The next favorite lightsaber scene is the "Duel of the Fates" - Darth Maul vs. Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan in The Phantom Menace.

#3? Yoda opens a can of Jedi whup**s on Dooku in Attack of the Clones.

And on through the top ten. Most of them I would have guessed, but many readers voted on some lightsaber scenes I found surprising. However, when I thought about them I could totally see why.

Not only the favorite lightsaber scene, but the most meaningful moment for many in the entire saga is when Luke Skywalker ignites his father's lightsaber for the first time. I give the Bantha Tracks readers credit for their thoughtfulness. I was thinking Jedi-Kick-Butt-Slash-and-Conquer kinds of scenes, but how can one argue that this scene in Obi-Wan's hermitage on Tatooine has impact? Especially after watching a heartbroken Obi-Wan pick up that lightsaber on Mustafar, leaving Anakin for dead.

Here's a great quote on a totally unexpected scene:
"I thought quite a bit about this question and as weird as it sounds, I am going to have to go with the sequence at the start of The Phantom Menace when we first see Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon use their lightsabers. True, they are only fighting droids. There is no dramatic duel, no flashy moves, or heart-wrenching confrontation. It's routine, which I think is why it is so captivating. This is the first time we really see who the Jedi were, what they were capable of, and what the universe had lost." -- Chris Cassidy

"...what the universe had lost." It's true. At the start of Episode IV we've got Obi-Wan out in the dunes and Yoda in the swamp. The light of the Jedi had gone out of the universe, as old Ben said.

And then, of course, there's Han opening the tauntaun with Luke's lightsaber on Hoth. Don't know...just can't beat Han holding a lightsaber, even if he's not a Jedi.

I love when R2 jettisons Luke's green saber to start Han's rescue.. and Luke swabs the deck with Jabba's crew..

When Darth Maul ignites the red dual bladed lightsaber in the theed Hanger. whoa..

I love when Ben holds his lightsaber (duel with Darth Vader) up in a New Hope to become part of the Living Force.

Last of all, I love when Obi Wan is holding his saber up and has his moment of realization.. Anakin, his brother has turned to the darkside..and he has indeed become an Absolute Sith..

bloggers do it better:)

I'm currently a huge fan of Anakin activating his saber on the Younglings just because even if we don't get a bunch of Jedi action with Anakin, that shows just how far Vader has fallen in one simple moment. (That and I didn't think Mr. Lucas would go that far, kudos!)

As a sidenote: It may be internal info or something, but if you can say... Approximatly how many votes did you get for this (or all bantha polls on average?)

that is a great comment on an unexpected scene. i felt similarly about it, but the clarity of expression never seemed to surface like that. TPM's obiwan and QG slashing away at battle droids (read - nonsentient beings) is ultimately the jedi ideal - not harming sentient beings in anyway, just defending and protecting them.

And Han knew how to use that lightsaber and use it well!

The youngling scene is truly chilling... GL is the greatand letting your make your own "worst scenario"..

The Mustafar Scene with the Darth Vader taking out Separatist leaders.. He artistically wields his lightsaber and slices wih such grace your almost feel sorry for them..almost.

The ESB Dagobah Luke vs Vader scene is excellent.. "is this really happening"? and the horror on Luke's face (s)..

Speak softly but, carry a big lightsaber,

How about when Mace has Jango with his saber in AOTC? Or when Luke finally defeats Vader? Or even the fight between Luke and Vader on Bespin in Cloud City?

There are so many great moments, but numero uno has to be in The Phantom Menace, the 30 seconds after Maul has killed Qui-Gon and Ben and Maul go at it.
Crank up the speakers, lay back and enjoy - I think for pure adrenaline that is the ultimate Star Wars moment.
And to think, people stiull knock The Phantom Menace. I think it's an amazing piece of work, and always will.
Great poll by the way, wish I'd hopped over to take a look (so much to do on the net these days!)

Wow, I didn't really think about those kinds of lightsaber scenes! Those are making me question my vote...

That was my quote. So you're not surprised eh? Well you'll find that I'm full of surprises! ;)

Keep on the lookout for Count Boobu in the near future, bwahaha...

Its not a lightsaber scene, but it is related... I love when Obi-Wan throws the blast on the ground after defeating Grievous and utters the "how uncivilized" quote.

Okay, I now this is really late posting, but I just joined hyperspace and saw this blog. The one scene that will I'll always remember is the first time Luke used the force to get his lightsaber in the Wampa cave on Hoth. I just remember is so vividly from my childhood.

I really love the Jedi and the Force and the lightsabers ect but I think the Battle of Masters is the best or Yoda an Dooku.

I think the scene where Luke first ignites his fathers saber in Bens home holds a lot of impact for those of us who saw the OT FIRST, and for us this was our very first taste of this amazing, "elegant" weapon, if even for just the few short moments he had it on...shortly after of course we get an actual scene of just what this weapon is capable of in The Cantina when Ben whips out a can of whupp-arm with it...again, when the film first came out no one knew what a Lightsaber WAS...and we were all blown away by it.

Maybe I'm giving in to the Dark Side, but my favorite Lightsaber moment in Star Wars is

- The Arrest. ROTS.

It happens when four Jedi Masters(Kit Fisto, Saesee Tiin, Agen Kolar, and Mace Windu) walk into the Chancellor's office to "arrest" him. You cant tell me you didnt get chills when Palpatine just stands up calmly, drops the lightsaber out of his sleeve, says very little, and then leaps and spins to where the Jedi are and very quickly and without much opposition, cuts down three Jedi in just under 2 minutes. Then he and Mace have, what is, without question, the darkest and fiercest lightsaber duel of the entire saga. You can see the determination in both of their eyes'.
