My Mother - The Darth Vader Fan
My mother professes to me that she goes to movies in order to relax. She doesn't think. She doesn't get involved in the story. She just finds them entertaining. In the past 10 years, I know my mom has sat and watch every Star Wars movie with me (despite she doesn't quite remember all of them), and I have answered every one of her questions at least a dozen times.

Misconceptions run rampant when we watch Star Wars. I can't count the number of times I've had to explain that Luke Skywalker is not Darth Vader, Anakin Skywalker is not Luke Skywalker, and no, Leia isn't Luke's lover--they're brother and sister. But there are some things you just can't explain. Sometimes you have to let a movie--or a series--speak for itself.

I was hoping when I took her to see Revenge of the Sith, that things would finally be cleared up. She would have her long-awaited "ah-ha!" moment, and everything would make sense.

Finally. That day arrived today.

We finally understood that Anakin Skywalker is not Luke Skywalker--he is his father. Anakin becomes Darth Vader. We learned that too! And lo and behold, the confusion has been cleared.

But the true joy of the day was watching my mother watch this movie. She professes that she's no fan, that she doesn't get involved--but you wouldn't be able to tell it from the look on her face. From laughter at Artoo's antics to gasping when Anakin goes on his rampage throughout the Jedi Temple--my mother was there. And there was no mistaking it.

One funny moment that stood out in my mind. In the beginning of the movie:

Anakin: Our baby is a blessing.
My Mother: *to the screen* It's a good thing because you're going to be a villian!

Funny thing, though, through all of this--the misconceptions, the confusion, the questions--one thing had remained: my mother is a Darth Vader fan. I'm not sure if it's the black suit, the breathing, James Earl Jones' voice or what. But she has a fascination for Vader. I can find her in the toy aisle playing with the Darth Vader voice changer. She wants me to buy a Darth Vader talking bank. Her fascination at F.A.O Schwartz was the life-size breathing, talking Darth Vader. She stood in front of him, simply grinning, smiling.

It's too amusing. But I love it. She might be strange; she might be weird. But she's my Mom. My Star Wars geek Mom. And I'll love her forever.
