To Catalog or Not To Catalog
A close friend of mine (and fellow Star Wars collector) has started off (again) on a project of gigantic proportions. He is attempting (for the third time, I believe it is), to make a giant pictoral catalog of his entire Star Wars collection. From those tiny little card sets up to the bit advertisements from stores, this guy is going to record it all.

I give him credit. He has my admiration. I've watched him slave away for the last couple of weeks, wading through boxes of stuff and clearing off a pile just so he can have a place to sit down or sleep at night. And I have to say...he has more courage than I'll ever have.

The bulk of my Star Wars collection sits in a closet. I have attempted over the years to keep everything in boxes, very neat, very tidy...but the key word here is "attempted." When you hear something tumble in the closet and then end up somewhere near the floor with a loud "bang," you pray to the Force that it wasn't something fragile. I've dug the boxes out now and again, perhaps to put up some new things on display and to box up some old ones...and back into the darkness they go.

But now I'm starting to wonder...is cataloging such a bad idea? Maybe it would be nice to have a record of every tiny little thing I have. But the issue is all the time I'd have to spend going through every tiny little thing I have. And I have the tendency to get sidetracked--I'll find something of interest and then I'll recall all of the memories that go with that one thing. It could become a rather dangerous project if I decided to undertake it. I might not be seen until many years later when my hair has gone gray and my skin is wrinkled.

So now I'm left thinking...to catalog or not to catalog...?
