I'm not a gambling man but...
Wooo-hooo!!!!! Did I have fun in Las Vegas recently :D er.. yes I did...

Back in the days of my visits to Reno, Nevada I used to enjoy the quarter slots and mostly come away with more than I arrived. But this time it was different...... I discovered -- wait for it - the 1 cent slot machine!!!! YES! I was able to make one dollar last me for 3 or 4 hours!!! Heck, I was even into some nice profit at one point. Yeah I should have cashed out while I was ahead but who does that? I had fun anyway.

Many of the slots were what they called video slots with video screens that did all these different scenes. I hadn't seen those before, or at least not been aware of them. My wife Jerri and I found a couple of Star Wars video slots. They were really cool. One was based on the original movie and another was titled The Dark Side. They used footage and new animation for some of the scenes. Ironically I did terribly and lost my dollar mighty fast. So much for Rebels winning eh? However, I think Jerri has the magic touch on these things. She almost consistently had good fortune and I can't figure out how that works? Can it really just be good luck? I'm sure there's a certain amount of skill and good judgement involved and not just a case of randomly punching buttons but I couldn't help wondering if the Force was with her. How else could it be explained? Can it be that some people have a greater power guiding them that can be listened to? Most people will say this is true for us all if we want it.

So, without getting too deep, to follow this logic, gambling can be a religious experience, right? People talk to these flashing musical idols, and follow their specific lucky rituals. So there we have it - praying to the casino gods.

For me it's just entertainment. Nothing more, nothing less. Just like my career. I don't expect to change the world in any fancy way (although who wouldn't love that?) but to take someone to a different place to real life through the medium of film and television. I think Vegas is the same. That's why people flock to Vegas in droves (or drove to Vegas in flocks?) to escape and have a good time..... and good luck to 'em .. er I mean, may the Force be with 'em ;)

I'll enjoy reading comments on this one, hee heee... :D

to escape and have a good time

How 'bout to escape and have a hangover...heeheehee.

Vegas...its all right, I guess. I call it the adult Disneyland...very over bloated place, but fun in a sick kind of way. My odds were always better at Reno. Never tell me the odds.

Now that would be cool to play. Vegas baby.

You're lucky you can keep yourself to a (dollar?) budget! I'm always afraid that I'd have blown my savings by the end of one crazy night.

All power to your chips.

I am gambling death. My wife refuses to go into a casino with me (we sometimes sneak over to Reno when we are meant to be conversing with nature in Lake Tahoe).

She calls me The Cooler - except that I mainly create the bad luck and negative energy just for myself - like a black hole of betting.

I've never been to Vegas - but I want to go just to look at the lights and laugh at everything.

Vegas is FUN!!! I haven't been in several years now, but I used to go fairly often for work (I know, how awful!!). ;)

I would love to see those Star Wars machines!! How cool!!! I just know I would blow all of my money on those!!

Like Stooge, I budget myself in Vegas - it's the ONLY way! Otherwise, I would come home bankrupt!! :O

Can it really just be good luck?

In my experience, there's no such thing as luck. ;)

Glad to hear you had a good time, Mike! :)

:_|

You were here in Vegas and I didn't have the chance to even invite you over for dinner!!!

:_|

Please, next time you are welcome to join us for a bite or a drink or something....

As for the gambling.... living here it is VERY easy to avoid - it feels like living anywhere else. When we do venture down to the strip for some "fun" we only put in our wallets what we are willing to lose. Last time, we went with $50 and came home with $75. We still haven't hit it "big" yet, but believe me, the world will know when we win something!! LOL!

Reading everyone's comments here is what makes these blogs fun for me. Great stuff!
Yup it's a crazy town for sure. It seems to me you can make what you want of it. If you plan and censor yourself, I believe you can eat and play pretty cheaply and come away still alive. If you don't pay attention, well.... you're gonna need lots-o-luck!

It seems some of us are agreeing on Reno being kinder to us.

Fear not Oboe-Wan, I shall return soon. Did they ever get that craine off of the Hoover Dam and when it fell was anyone hurt?

Oh, that's something else I learend... The Hoover Dam wasn't named after a vaccum cleaner :p

No, it was named after some guy. ;)

I hadn't been following the story (we watch very little t.v. here...) so I haven't heard if it's cleared yet or not. Was supposed to be gone by the end of the week...

Hey, the next time you're in town, check out Phantom of the Opera. I heard there's a rockin' oboist who sits in the orchestra every now and then!! :D

I'm off to Vegas next week (as Oboe-Wan knows) to get hitched, and as its my 4th visit I know what to expect and CANNOT wait.
Vegas rules, but some folks just can't stop when they hit those slots.
Always enjoy your blogs, and still click back to read the interview you did with us at Lightsabre last year (watching Woodys Roundup gives me an extra kick, and pointed out your name to the future Mrs in the cfedits of Clones.
Will be in touch soon for a follow up interview if you are interested.
