Words of Wisdom!!
Words of wisdom...

They can come from just about any source: friends, parents, literature, e-mails; the list goes on and on. Most of us respond to inspirational quotes with a sense of intrinsic appreciation: "How can I apply this to my life?", or "Wow - those words really spoke to me today, given my current situation."

Most of you who read my blog regularly (well, as regularly as I blog...!) know that I'm a high school teacher. More specifically, I teach Family and Consumer Sciences, a subject that teaches "life skills:" goal-setting, self-esteem building and relationship techniques, as well as the everyday stuff like finances, parenting skills and managing other resources.

My students know that I am a huge SW fan, and I have incorporated my love of SW with my daily classroom routine. I call it "The Quote of the Day." All quotes are from the GFFA, and I try and choose the quote based on what we are studying at that time. For example:

During a unit on setting goals: "Your focus determines your reality." ~ Qui-Gon Jinn

For studying brain development in Parenting class: "Truly wonderful, the mind of a child is." ~ Yoda

In the unit on making good decisions, I turned to the EU: "Life is more a matter of choosing than of knowing. You can never know the eventual destination of your path, but you can always choose in which direction to take each step." ~ Jacen Solo, Traitor

Even Palpy gets in on the fun with this quote I've used for self-esteem: "In time, you will learn to trust your feelings. Then, you will be invincible."
I have collected a variety of quotes from the movies as well as SW books that I've read. I started cataloguing these quotes about a year ago, so I'm sure there are some great quotes out there from books I've read previously to the time I began doing this, or quotes from the movies that I've missed, so I would love to hear from you!!

Here's a list of the quotes I have compiled - please feel free to add your contributions!

(Thanks goes out to Anakinside1, who has encouraged me to write this blog entry for ages - here ya go, girlie!) :D :x

Hi Mo2YP!

There are so many.... one that sticks out in my mind is when Anakin and OB1 are shouting on the platform at Mustafar ....

Anakin - "You will not take her from me"
OB1 - "You've Done that Yourself"

At the time RoTS came out, my ex-hubby and I were going through very, very bad times. That movie is very real for me in so many ways.... I connected with it in ways I never imagined I would be able to connect with a movie.

Another that sticks out, again from RoTS is when Yoda and Anakin are meeting in the temple about Anakin's fear of losing Padme.... can't remember the exact quote but, it came into play when my daughter's best friend's Mom passed away.

Wow. I love that you do this. Incorporating the wisdom of our beloved saga with your teachings was a wonderful idea. You're the coolest teacher in the galaxy... :D

So many great ones you have here. I'd sit and try to add but I'm getting ready for an internal audit here at work and I'm short on time. I'll keep my thinkin cap on though.

Great list, my dear!

Very cool how you incorporate the quotes in your lesson plans. Yet another way to get a generation into SW. ;)

Here are some more quotes:
"In my experience, there's no such thing as luck." - Obi-Wan

"Master Yoda said I should be mindful of the future." - Obi-Wan
"But not at the expense of the moment." - Qui-Gon

"What's in there?" - Luke
"Only what you take with you." - Yoda

"Patience." - various characters

And the best advice: "Laugh it up (fuzzball)." - Han Solo :D

A great list/blog, ducky!

Interestingly, and somewhat predictably, all my favorite quotes come from Yoda.
As he is the sage of the saga, this was to be expected I guess :)

The two most pertinent quotes from him are 1. "You must unlearn, what you have learned." which relates to me as an artist.

Many of my art influences, Picasso, Gabo, Epstein, spent their later years trying to regress back to an art form untainted by social expectations, and I did the same for the longest time. The ability to draw like a child is wonderful, it creates an honesty in your work.

2. "Truly wonderful, the mind of a child is." This line made me choke up a bit when I first heard it.

There's a lot more to this quote than meets the eye. What Yoda is suggesting that we don't just rely on the eyes of innocents to explain the world, but that we see the world through those very eyes. There's nothing wrong in letting yourself regress back to childhood and looking at your surrounding through fresh eyes - the world is a wonderous place, even more so when you strip away the cynicism and fatigue of age.

There. I'm done being sensible now.

Awesome blog, MO2!!!!! :x

How about...

"Never tell me the odds!" :D Han

Also...

"Never his mind on where he was... what he was doing." Yoda

And...

"I won't fail you... I'm not afraid" Luke

What a fantastic idea this is, MO2!! I love this! :x

Like My Father Before Me
date Posted: Oct 03, 2007 9:38 AM
Not so much 'words of wisdom" but the line "I am a Jedi, like my father before me" speaks volumes to me. Luke has come into his own, he's found his place in the GFFA, he has made peace with his father and his heritage.... He knows what he stands for. This will guide Luke throughout the rest of his life on a path that he will never waver from. That surety of purpose and self is something I desperately long for.... I get closer everyday, but it's still a journey for me.

Nice one! B-)

You're the coolest teacher in the galaxy... Awwww, shucks! :8} (As my students work on an assignment, I'm writing this LOL!!! :O !!)

I'm getting ready for an internal audit here at work and I'm short on time. I'll keep my thinkin cap on though. Bummer! I'll hold you to that, though!! ;)

The ability to draw like a child is wonderful, it creates an honesty in your work. Well-said, indeed.

I am so bad at remembering quotes, but when they stick with me, there's a reason. Some of yours are among the most important quotes I know. Qui-gon is particularly good for meaningful quotes. One of my fav's is, "Your focus determines your reality." You've added some, though, that I really love.

Great entry. Glad I saw it!

I've always loved a good quote, though most of the ones that I've found wisest are unfortunately not from Star Wars.
Almost all of the quoted you listed are good, with a few exceptions. I don't really have much to add, though the "I'm going to save you" "You already have..." Luke-Vader exchange is great.

Good blog. :)

Oh, I'm so glad you did this! It's so much fun to see what you've compiled. I remember when I got to visit your classroom and this is what you board said:
Will we have a snow day??? Hard to see the future is. :D That was so cute! And if I remember correctly you had several snow days that week!

"Before one can learn truth, one must unlearn lies" -Nom Anor, Traitor
This one really struck me. That would describe the last five years of my life pretty succinctly.

My contribution would be:
You must learn to let go of all you fear to lose...

Wonderful entry! What a wonderful list of quotes! :D

There is a quote in TPM, that Qui-Gon says about meeting Anakin that I have been saying for years:

"Nothing happens by accident."

I am a firm believer in that, and always have been. Everything happens for a reason, and everything happens the way it's supposed to.

I've got a very bad feeling about this." This one, I like!!! ;)

How about this Obi-Wan ANH quote:

and Yoda from ROTS:

Great quotes.

Twice the pride, double the fall

I love quoting that line when the situation arises, especially against my brother.

Truly wonderful, the mind of a child is.

In the Episode II book by R.A. Salvatore, Yoda adds the word, "uncluttered" at the end of that line (he may in the movie as well), I think that that one extra word truly sums up the meaning of that quote. As I've grown older (and I'm still not very old), I find that quote coming true day after day.

Who is the more foolish? The fool, or the fool who follows him?

:^O I love that line!

There a sooooooo many lines I love, so for now, I will limit myself to ANH.;)

I've always been fond of the exchange between Owen & 3PO--

"Shut up."

"Shutting up, sir."

Haha! On a more serious note, I love when Vader says, "The circle is now complete" and "I find your lack of faith disturbing."

A good one for your class (depending on the students, I guess) might be 3PO's "Watch your language!" ;)

And I'll leave you with a great one from Han: "She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts."

Be mindful of the future, but not at the expense of the moment

That must be a hard one for teenagers... all I could ever think about was the future... "never my mind on where I was, what I was doing" LOL

There is no shame in falling. There is only shame if you refuse to rise once again.

Words of wisdom, indeed. As all the above quotes are. And what a great way to get your lessons across!

You've already got my very favorite - Yoda's "Do. Or do not. There is no try!" I even have a t-shirt with that quote on it. :D

Here are a couple that might come in handy:

"The shield generator has to cover everything from the beach to the tops of the mountains." - Gen. Horton Salm, Rogue Squadron

"I always like it when I get to accomplish three things at the same time. It makes life so much more efficient." - Mara Jade Skywalker, Survivor's Quest

So many great quotes, I hope I can come up with a few.

While I love "Do or do not. There is no try" (I have it on the lanyard for my I.D. badge at work), I'm not sure if I want kids to think they shouldn't try something because they think they can't do it. On the other hand, it could be interpreted as giving it your all instead of a half hearted attempt.

"Never tell me the odds"-Han Solo

"Leave that to me"-Darth Vader

"Your weapons, you will not need them"-Yoda

"IT'S A TRAP!"-Admiral Ackbar

"Come with me"-Darth Vader (That's leadership, baby)

"I'll make him an offer he can't refuse"-Oh, wait. Wrong movie.

"I always knew there was more to you than money"-Princess Leia

"Boob beedoop bee doop boo doo"-R2-D2

A wonderful entry here, MO2YP! Only just read it now that I'm back from vacation.

It's amazing how many lines we can quote from the entire SW galaxy and have them make sense in our own lives. It's great that you use various lines to teach your class. What better way to educate than with the lessons of Star Wars?

"so be it, Jedi" - Palpatine I love this line. It captures the essence of Star Wars ... Luke makes a stand for good that saves his father and rids the galaxy of a terrible evil. His bravery to do what is right is what it's all about and this truly marks the return of the Jedi.
